Mini Jazzi World Trip (Day 6 in Brazil)

E chegamos bem cedinho ao Rio de Janeiro! Sempre que se fala do Brasil lá fora, a primeira cidade que vem na mente dos estrangeiros é a do Rio... E geralmente pensam que é a capital do Brasil, rsrs... Não estão tão errados assim! A primeira foi Salvador, até 1763, quando passou a ser o Rio de Janeiro. E depois, a partir de 1960 é que foi transferida para Brasília, especialmente construída para isso...
And we arrived very early in the morning to Rio de Janeiro! Whenever Brazil is mentioned abroad, the first city that comes to the mind of most foreigners is Rio... And most of them usually think it's the capital of Brazil... :) They are not completely far off in this assumption! The first capital of Brazil was Salvador (in Bahia), until 1763, when the government was transferred to Rio de Janeiro. The city only lost its position as capital of the country in 1960, when it was again transferred to the newly built Brasília, in the middle of the country...

O aeroporto Santos Dumont fica bem na cidade, o que facilitou nossa visita de um dia. Mas dá um medo ao aterrisar, pois parece que a pista é curta demais e o avião vai cair na água. Nada disso, no final, é bem seguro!
Santos Dumont airport, where we landed, is very near downtown, which made our one-day-visit easier. But MJ and I were a little afraid of the landing, as from the top the lane seems way too short to allow the aircraft to stop on time. We couldn't be more wrong: we landed safely!

E tenho uma confissão a fazer: existe uma 'rivalidade' tradicional entre paulistas e cariocas. Cariocas adoram falar mal de São Paulo, e vice-versa. Como uma típica paulistana, admito que não sou fã do Rio de Janeiro. É uma cidade linda, mas não gosto do cheiro e, principalmente do trânsito!... Se em São Paulo o problema são os engarrafamentos, no Rio são os carros estacionados nos passeios e a velocidade! Sempre que ando de carro ou ônibus no Rio, me vejo rezando durante todo o trajeto, rsrs... 
Ok, now I have a confession to make: there is a 'traditional' rivalry between 'paulistas' (people from São Paulo) and 'cariocas' (people from Rio). 'Cariocas' love to bash São Paulo, and vice-versa. As a typical 'paulistana' (even if I now live in Minas), I admit not being a huge fan of Rio de Janeiro... Yes, it IS a beautiful city, but I don't like the way it smells and, above all, its traffic!... If in São Paulo the main problem is that the traffic doesn't flow due to the constant 'jams', in Rio the problem are the cars parking on any sidewalks and the speed they drive! Whenever I ride a bus or car in Rio I 'catch myself' praying all the way... :)

Mas a MJ discordou totalmente de mim!!!! Adorou a cidade! A paisagem, os locais que visitamos, as praias, as pessoas! Achou o carioca alegre, hospitaleiro e gentil. Bem, se ela está feliz, missão cumprida, não é? :)
But MJ's opinion couldn't be more different!!! She absolutely loved the city! The landscape, the places we visited, the beaches, the people! She thinks the 'cariocas' are happy, friendly and nice. Well, if she is happy, mission accomplished, right? :)

Do aeroporto, nossa primeira parada foi o símbolo reconhecido internacionalmente como "Rio de Janeiro", claro! O famosíssimo Cristo Redentor! MJ fez questão de posar como o Cristo, quando viu que é uma pose 'clássica' entre os turistas. Ficou bonitinha, né? :)
As soon as we left the airport, we went straight to the symbol which is recognized internationally as "Rio de Janeiro", of course! The extremely famous "Cristo Redentor" (Christ statue, on top of "Corcovado" Hill)! MJ insisted on posing like the statue, when she realized it one of the favorite 'poses' among tourists visiting the place. She actually looks very cute, doesn't she? :)

Existem inúmeros pontos turísticos na cidade, e obviamente não daria tempo de visitar todos em um só dia. Sem contar a vida noturna, espetáculos, shows, etc. Mas tinhamos que maximizar nosso tempo e mais uma confissão: queria conhecer alguns pontos que ajudarão na minha pesquisa para a loja do século 19 que estou montando. Então escolhi irmos à Quinta da Boa Vista. Quando a Família Real chegou ao Brasil em 1808, a Quinta pertencia ao riquíssimo traficante de escravos português Elias Antônio Lopes, que havia construído o casarão por volta de 1803. Situado sobre uma colina tinha uma boa vista da baía de Guanabara na época – o que deu origem ao atual nome. Passou por várias reformas e ampliações, mas foi a "casa" da família real até a proclamação da República, em 1898. Atualmente, funciona como um parque, abrigando o Jardim Zoológico do Rio de Janeiro (com o Museu da Fauna) e um Museu. 
There are countless touristic places to visit in Rio, and obviously we would not have enough time to visit them all in only one day. We didn't even consider the lively nightlife, shows, nightclubs, theaters, musicals, etc. So, we had to maximize our time there, and now another confession: I wanted to visit some places which will help me in my research for the end of the 19th century store I'm building in 1/12th scale. So I chose to visit Quinta da Boa Vista. When the Portuguese Royal Family arrived to Brazil in 1808, this Manor belonged to the wealthy slaves dealer Elias Antonio Lopes, who had it built in 1803. Built on top of a hill, it had a beautiful view of Guanabara Bay back then - which originated its name ("Beautiful View Manor"). It went through some remodeling and enhancing, but it was the royal family's "home" until the proclamation of the Republic, in 1898. Now it works as a park, a museum and it also has a zoo. 

Para chegar ao próximo marco que escolhi, passamos pelo Sambódromo, onde ocorrem os famosos desfiles de carnaval. Como não estamos na época, a MJ nem quis posar para foto, achou muito vazio e sem graça, rsrs... Fica muito mais animado durante o Carnaval, sem dúvida!
To arrive at the next landmark I chose, we passed by the 'Sambódromo', where carnival parades take place. Well, carnival only happens in February or March, so MJ didn't even care to pose for a picture. She thought it was too empty and plain, lol... I agree that it looks very different during Carnival!

Chegamos ao Jardim Botânico. Outra criação de D. João VI assim que chegou ao Rio, em 1808, com a finalidade de aclimatar as plantas de especiarias oriundas das Índias Orientais: noz-moscada, canela e pimenta-do-reino. Uma das mais belas e bem preservadas áreas verdes da cidade, é um exemplo da diversidade da flora brasileira e estrangeira. Nele podem ser observadas cerca de 6 500 espécies (algumas ameaçadas de extinção). Absolutamente magnífico!
We arrived to the Botanical Garden. This is another creation of D. João VI, as soon as he got to Rio in 1808. The primary goal was to adjust spice plants from the "Eastern Indies" to the country: nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper. One of the most beautiful and well preserved green areas of the city, it's an example of the diversity of the original flora of the area and also has some foreign species. There are about 6,500 species, some even endangered. Absolutely magnificent!

Então fomos visitar o outro "lado" da cidade, um contraste que começou desde o tempo do final do Império: as favelas. Há visitas guiadas em algumas delas, e o governo vem promovendo ações de 'pacificação' (remoção de traficantes e apoio à comunidade) desde 2008, sendo que a Rocinha foi a primeira a passar por esta 'limpeza'. As moradias são modestas mas a vista até que é bonita!
Next, we took a guided tour to see the other 'side' of the city, a contrast that started right after the end of slavery: the slums. The government has been trying hard since 2008 to remove the criminals from them and bring some social assistance too. 'Rocinha', the largest one, was the first to suffer this kind of intervention. The dwellings are very modest, but the view is amazing!

Descendo o morro, fomos finalmente conhecer uma das praias mais famosas do Rio e do Brasil: Copacabana! Este bairro viveu seu auge nas décadas de 50 e 60, mas ainda é um belo lugar para visitar. MJ que o diga, pois adorou curtir uma praiazinha. Depois de um bom tempo relaxando e tomando água de coco e aproveitando a sombra do guarda-sol, trocou de roupa para podermos continuar o passeio pelo centro da cidade...
Going down the hill, we finally spent some time at one of the most famous beaches of Rio and of Brazil, actually: Copacabana! This neighborhood was on its prime during the 50's and 60's, but it's still a beautiful place to visit. MJ would say so, as she loved to enjoy the beach, finally. After a couple of ours just relaxing under the umbrella, sipping coconut water and enjoying the view, we unfortunately had to go on. She changed her clothes into a more comfortable outfit for walking and we visited downtown area...

Passeamos pelos Arcos da Lapa. É um lugar fascinante, por reunir bem próximo o antigo e o moderno. Originalmente um aquaduto que trazia água potável do Rio Carioca para a cidade, atualmente passa sobre ele um bonde. Foi construído ainda no século 18, e várias construções da Lapa são daquela data. Mas há muitos prédios modernos por perto também. Já apareceu em filmes e até em um episódio do extinto seriado de TV CSI Miami!
First we visited 'Lapa arches'. It's a fascinating place, as you can see around it the old and the new. Originally an aqueduct meant to bring water from Carioca River to the city, it was build in the 18th century and several buildings near it are from that time or from the 19th century. But there are also some very modern buildings nearby too. This structure has been shown in American movies and TV Shows like the defunct CSI Miami!

Nossa última visita foi à Cinelândia. Ganhou este nome na década de 50, porque então havia lá vários cinemas e teatros. Com a vinda dos shoppings, os cinemas foram todos para dentro deles, só sobrando o Odeon. Mas a região é linda. Reflete uma época, no início do século 20, quando o prefeito abriu largas avenidas, fez vários aterros (ganhando cidade sobre o mar) e construíu vários prédios no estilo do Teatro Municipal com a intenção de tornar o Rio de Janeiro o mais parecido possível com Paris. Mas governos posteriores mudaram de idéia e estética e o Rio deixou de ser a Paris tropical... Mas vários prédios da época continuam lá.
Our last stop was 'Cinelândia' (Movieland). The area got this name in the 50's, as there were several movie theaters there. With the advent of shopping malls, most moved into them, looking for safety, and now there's only one left. But the area is very beautiful. It's a reminder of a time when, in the beginning of the 20th century, the mayor back then decided to remodel the city to make it look like a 'tropical Paris'. But the governments that followed disagreed and completely changed the style of buildings in the city, so Rio is no longer a 'tropical Paris'... But several buildings still stand, like the Municipal Theater.

Como já começava a entardecer, resolvemos voltar para o aeroporto e ir direto para a próxima etapa da viagem, em vez de dormir no Rio de Janeiro. Assim não precisaríamos levantar tão cedo para pegar o próximo vôo, rsrs...
As it was getting late, we decided to head back to the airport and take the last flight to our next destination, instead of sleeping in the city. This way we wouldn't have to wake up so early to catch the first flight of the day... ;)

Dicas de segurança para visitar o Rio de Janeiro e outras cidades:
1) Evite sair sozinho, prefira excursões recomendadas por seu agente de confiança.
2) Informe-se sobre a área que pretende visitar, para saber se é segura.
3) Evite ostentação: nada de jóias, brincos, relógios, etc. Até mesmo bijuteria é melhor evitar. Quer parecer bem na foto? Sorria! :)
4) Evite câmeras caras. Modelos mais simples hoje em dia tiram fotos excelentes. 
5) Fique SEMPRE de olho nos seus pertences. Se na Europa bolsas ou sacolas desacompanhadas podem ser destruídas pela polícia (temendo bombas), por aqui elas são logo roubadas por ladrões que, ao contrário de você, estavam sempre de olho, esperando a oportunidade!
6) Ladrões conseguem 'detectar' turistas de longe, pelo andar distraído e, principalmente, pela roupa 'de férias' que adoram usar. Use roupas discretas.
Safety tips to visit Rio de Janeiro (and other cities in general):
1) Avoid making excursions on your own. Choose guided tours recommended by a travel agent you trust.
2) If you really prefer to go alone, get information about the area, check if it's safe to visit.
3) Avoid to display signs of 'wealthy': no jewelry, necklaces, earrings, watches, etc. Even imitations might attract the greed of thieves. Do you want to look good in the pictures? Smile! :)
4) Avoid carrying expensive photographic equipment. There are good 'inexpensive' digital cameras nowadays.    
5) ALWAYS keep your belongings close to you and keep an eye on them at all times. If in Europe unattended bags might be 'exploded' by the police (fearing bombs), here they are stolen by thieves who, unlike you, have been paying close attention, waiting for the first opportunity to take them!
6) Thieves can spot tourists from a great distance, by the distracted look and, specially, the 'flashy' tropical clothes/shirts. Do NOT wear those, please! Keep a low profile.

Mini Jazzi World Trip (Day 5 in Brazil)

E hoje chegamos a São Paulo, a grande megalópole da America Latina!... Com mais de 16 milhões de habitantes, não é um típico destino turístico. Geralmente considerado mais um centro de negócios, pois grandes empresas têm sede aqui, e várias feiras e eventos ocorrem o ano todo. Também um grande centro cultural, com várias universidades de qualidade, muitos teatros, casas de espetáculo e uma vida noturna para lá de efervecente! Além de ter uma variedade gastronômica impressionante. Dá para experimentar comida do mundo todo sem sair da cidade...
Today we arrived to Sao Paulo, the largest megalopolis of all Latin America!... With more than 16 million inhabitants, it's not a common touristic destination. It's usually considered more a business center, as big companies are located here; and also there are several business fairs, shows and events taking place all year round. It's also a great cultural center, with quality universities, many theaters, and a nightlife very active! It is also known for its restaurants circuit, where you can eat food typical to any country in the world without even leaving the city...

A cidade, como todas as megalópolis do mundo, tem vários problemas, como transporte público insuficiente, grandes engarrafamentos e poluição. Mas também tem muitos atrativos!...
The city, as most megalopolis in the world, has its problems like: insufficient public transportation, huge traffic jams and a lot of pollution. But it also has many attractions!...

Assim que chegamos, passamos pela praça Campos de Bagatelle, onde há uma réplica em tamanho natural do avião 14 Bis. A França e o Brasil estão de acordo que o brasileiro Santos Dumont é o pai da aviação por ter sido o primeiro a fazer um objeto mais pesado do ar sair do chão por recursos próprios. Os americanos reclamam a 'paternidade' para os Irmãos Wright... O fato é que várias invenções importantes para a humanidade, feitas no começo do século XX, foram desenvolvidas simultaneamente por pessoas bem distantes que nem sabiam do trabalho uns dos outros. Levou a fama quem conseguiu patentear primeiro, creio eu... O curioso neste avião é que a "cauda" ia na frente, invertendo totalmente o design a que estamos acostumados atualmente!
As soon as we arrived, we drove past 'Campos de Batagelle' square (actually round!), where there is an exact replica in natural size of the famous "14 Bis" airplane. France and Brazil agree that our Santos Dumont is the 'father of aviation', for being the first man to make a craft heavier than air take off on its own. The Americans claim the 'fatherhood' to the Wright Brothers... The thing is that several inventions which are really important to mankind, developed in the beginning of the 20th century, were worked on by different people at different and distant countries simultaneously, and they had no idea about each other's work.  The glory ended up being attributed to the first one to get it patented, I think... What is curious about this airplane is that what we now would think as the "tail" actually is the front, so it totally inverts the airplane design we're so used to nowadays!

Passamos pelo museu do Ipiranga, construído em 1895 para celebrar a independência, contém pinturas, estátuas, louças, jóias, móveis e vários itens que mostram a história do Brasil entre os séculos XIX e XX. Seu jardim é uma réplica reduzida dos jardins de Versailles. 
We also passed by Ipiranga Museum, built in 1895 to celebrate the Independency of Brazil. It contains several paintings, sculptures, china, jewelry, furniture and several other items that show the history of Brazil throughout 19 and 20 centuries. Its garden is a smaller version of the famous Versailles gardens.

Em seguida, passeamos pelo bairro da Liberdade, reduto da comunidade japonesa e descendentes. Várias lojas têm letreiros também em japonês, e lá se encontra restaurantes típicos e vários itens importados do Japão. No domingo tem uma feira na praça com artesanato e comida típica. Hummm, uma delícia! Perguntei para MJ se ela queria experimentar o McDonald's de lá. Ela me perguntou: "Tem o mesmo gosto?". "Creio que sim", respondi. "Ah, então deixa prá lá... Quero experimentar coisas novas!". Este sim é o verdadeiro espírito de aventura!
After that, we visited 'Liberdade' (freedom) neighborhood, the core of Japanese community in Sao Paulo. There are several stores there with Japanese writing for their names. One can find typical Japanese restaurants and stores that sell a large variety of items imported from Japan. On Sundays, there is a market fair on the main square where you can buy typical crafts and eat typical Japanese food. Hummm... delicious! I asked MJ if she wanted to try their McDonald's. She asked: "Does the food taste the same?". "I think so", I answered. "Oh, then, never mind... I want to try new things!". That's the true adventure spirit!

Chegando à Avenida Paulista, escolhida pela população como símbolo da cidade, MJ ficou impressionada com a quantidade de prédios. Erguida no final do século 19, era reduto da elite da época, com seus lindos casarões. A maioria foi derrubada, e hoje a avenida pulsa com atividade o tempo todo!
When we got to 'Avenida Paulista', chosen by popular vote as the symbol of the city, MJ was really impressed by the amount and size of the buildings. The avenue was created by the turn of last century, and back then it was (considered) far from downtown and also on a higher plane, so it had a beautiful view, and there were only manors, where the richest people lived. Now most of those beautiful houses were torn down and the avenue is hectic all day long!

Entre os marcos da avenida está o MASP. Só o prédio em si já merece uma visita. Ele parece desafiar as leis da gravidade, com seu vão no térreo... No seu acervo constam quadros de Rafael, Mantegna, Botticceli, Delacroix, Renoir, Monet, Cèzanne, Picasso, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Matisse, Chagall, Cândido Portinari e Di Cavalcanti, entre outros. E estátuas gregas, de Degas e outros. 
Among the landmarks of the avenue is MASP museum. The building itself is worth a visit. It seems to defy gravity laws, with its open area where there 'should' be a ground floor. In its collection there are paintings by Rafael, Mantegna, Botticceli, Delacroix, Renoir, Monet, Cèzanne, Picasso, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Matisse, Chagall, Cândido Portinari and Di Cavalcanti, among others. And also Greek statues and sculptures by Degas and other famous ones.

São Paulo é conhecida por ser um 'paraíso de compras'. Encontra-se de praticamente tudo lá, e há inúmeros shoppings espalhados pela cidade. Um dos primeiros e atualmente um dos maiores é o Shopping Ibirapuera.  Mas não é exatamente barateiro... 
Quando morava em São Paulo, eu preferia fazer compras em locais mais em conta, como a rua 25 de Março, um paraíso para artesãos, e onde encontrava muita coisa para fazer minhas minis. Mas foi só dar uma olhadinha na quantidade de gente que (normalmente) tinha na rua que a MJ logo comentou: "Sabe, não estou muito disposta a fazer minis nesta viagem, a gente pode deixar isto para outra vez?" rsrs... Bem, eu até que gostei, porque não estava muito a fim hoje também não, hehe...
Sao Paulo is known for being a 'shopping heaven'. One can find practically anything there, and there are several shopping malls all over the city. One of the first ones and currently one of the largest is Shopping Ibirapuera. Not cheap at all, though...
When I lived in Sao Paulo, I'd rather go shopping at more affordable places, like 'rua 25 de Março', a paradise for crafters, where I knew I could find many items I could use to make my minis. But one look on the amount of people crowding the street (it's normal!) was enough to make MJ say: "Know what? I'm not really in the mood to make minis during this trip. Would you mind leaving this for another time?" lol... Well, I actually liked this, as I wasn't in the mood to 'rub shoulders' with thousand people today... ;)

Não íamos comprar nada lá no Shopping também, mas bem que deu para aproveitar a praça de alimentação e os diversos restaurantes que têm lá dentro! Agora foi a vez da MJ experimentar a tradicional "feijoada" brasileira. Para alguém tão pequenina, ela até que come bem! E a caipirinha, então? Vixi! Nem quis saber da versão mini, feita especialmente para ela (veja no cantinho). Queria provar a minha, que, segundo ela "parecia mais gostosa!". Ai, ai, vou levar bronca da Jazzi!!! 

Not that we were actually going to buy anything at Ibirapuera Mall either, but we might as well enjoy one of their superb restaurants or even the food court! It was finally time for MJ to try the traditional and famous Brazilian "Feijoada". It consists of a stew of black beans and pork parts, served with several side dishes, like white rice, cole, manioc crumbs, and sliced oranges. For someone so small, she has a very healthy appetite! And she also tried the famous "Caipirinha drink". OMG!!! She didn't even look at the mini-size drink they made specially for her (look at the corner of the picture). She went straight to my full-size version, which, according to her "looked more tasteful!". Oh, my... I'm going to be told off by Jazzi!!!

Feijoada + caipirinha dão um sono... Então a tarde foi mais tranquila. Passeamos pelo bairro Morumbi, até pouco tempo era conhecido como o "Bairro dos ricos". O contraste entre os muito ricos e os muito pobres é gritante lá. De um lado, condomínios de luxo. De outro, várias favelas. Eles bem que poderiam investir numa urbanização, não? Se não se importam com os mais necessitados, pelo menos podiam 'melhorar a vista', oras... rsrs..
Feijoada + caipirinha is a sleepy combination... So we slowed our pace in the afternoon. We visited the Morumbi neighborhood, which until recently was known as the "neighborhood of the rich" (they move often, don't they?). The contrast between the filthy rich and the extremely poor is very obvious there. On one side, high end condos. On the other, slums. They could donate money and effort to promote urbanization of those poor areas, don't you think? If they don't care about the poor and needy, they could at least aim on improving their 'view'... ;)

Lá no morumbi fica a sede do governo do Estado (Palácio dos Bandeirantes), mas bem ao lado fica meu lugar favorito de toda a cidade: a Fundação Luísa e Oscar Americano! O casal deixou sua propriedade para a cidade e hoje é um museu e centro cultural, com cursos e vários outros eventos. A casa, de estilo moderno, foi projetada por Oswaldo Arthur Bratke em 1950.  Tem também um delicioso salão de chá e, meu favorito, um bosque que rodeia toda a propriedade. Com plantas como árvores do pau-brasil (que deu nome ao país e hoje está quase extinta) e pés de café. Uma ilha de tranquilidade e natureza no meio de uma imensa selva de pedra...
In that neighborhood is also located the government headquarters (Bandeirantes Palace), but right next to it is my favorite place of all in the whole city: Luisa and Oscar Americano Foundation! This wealthy couple left their property to the city after they died and now it's a museum, a cultural center (with courses and several events). The house, in a modern style, was designed by architect Oswaldo Arthur Bratke in 1950. It also has a delicious tea room and, my favorite, a 'woodland' surrounding the house. With plants like 'pau-brasil' tree (which gave name to the country but is almost extinct now) and coffee bushes, for example, it's an island of tranquility and nature in the middle of a huge 'concrete jungle'...

Mini Jazzi World Trip (Day 4 in Brazil)

Que dia maravilhoso!... Bastante frio, mas tantas coisas e lugares fantásticos para ver, que nem deu para sentir muito... Passamos o dia em Gramado, no Rio Grande do Sul. Há tantas atrações turísticas que não pudemos ver nem um terço em um só dia. Que pena que não dá para ficar mais...
Oh, what a wonderful day!... It was very cold, as an unexpected cold wave hit Brazil in this beginning of spring. But with so many things to do and fantastic places to see, we hardly even noticed it... Today we spent the day in Gramado, in Rio Grande do Sul. There are so many turistical attractions there we couldn't see even a third of it, as we had only one day to go. Too bad we couldn't stay a little longer here...

Gramado tem uma forte influência européia. Sua arquitetura, comida, as pessoas, tudo, tem toque da Alemanha. Também é conhecida como a "cidade das hortências", elas estão por toda a parte!...E também como a 'capital do chocolate' (ai, que delícia! Que tentação para mim, que sou chocólatra!), do Oktoberfest (mês que vem!) com suas comidas típicas alemãs e cerveja, o festival de cinema Brasileiro e Latino Americano (nossa versão de Cannes), e muito mais.
Gramado has a strong influence of the German immigrants who settled here in the beginning of last century. The architecture, the food, the people, the accent, everything has a strong German influence. It's also known as "the city of hydrangeas", they are everywhere!... And also as 'the capital of chocolate' (so delicious! And too tempting for me, I'm a chocaholic!), the city of Oktoberfest (next month, a very famous festival with many attractions takes place in the city), with its typical German foods and beer. And the city also known for hosting, once a year, the Brazilian and Latin America Film Festival, our version of "Cannes Film Festival".

Quem imagina o Brasil como um país puramente tropical se surpreende em saber que pode até nevar aqui! Veja esta foto deste cartão postal que achamos. MJ mal podia acreditar em seus olhos!...
People usually picture Brazil as a tropical country. It is, but it's way more than that... Here, for example, one can even see snow during winter! Look at this post card we found. MJ could barely believe her eyes!...

Mas a elegância das roupas de inverno estavam presentes por todo o lado. MJ com também é muito elegante, não acham? :)
The temperature dropped dramatically in the last couple of days, but no snow here. Nevertheless, people on the streets were dressed in their very elegant winter clothes. MJ is also very elegant, don't you think? :)

MJ e eu concordamos que um dos mais belos lugares de lá é o Lago Negro. É um lago artificial e tem este nome porque suas margens foram decoradas com árvores importadas da Floresta Negra, na Alemanha. Mas suas águas são de um tom verde claro. Muito lindo!
MJ and I agreed that one of the most beautiful places there is Black Lake. It's an artificial lake and has this name because the trees all around its margins were imported from the Black Forest, in Germany. But its waters are clear and greenish. Very beautiful!

Outro lugar interessante é a Rua Coberta. Além de pitoresco, e sempre ter apresentações de música, tem lojas e restaurantes fantásticos. É uma ótima alternativa para passear quando o tempo está chuvoso...
Another interesting place is Rua Coberta ('covered street'). Not only it is picturesque, and it's a known venue for music shows and other events, but it also has several interesting stores and fantastic restaurants. It's a great alternative to go when it's rainy...

Há muitas atrações em Gramado: Museu do Perfume, onde você pode conseguir seu perfume pessoal e exclusivo! O Museu do Chocolate; o Museu Medieval, Cristais de Gramado, com cristais feitos com a técnica de Veneza; o Kur Hotel, um spa maravilhoso; um clube de golf, zoológico, Museu de cera, o Super Carros, onde você poderá experimentar a sensação de dirigir carros famosos como o Camaro SS; uma vinícula com degustação de vinhos, e muito mais.
There are so many touristic attractions in Gramado: A Perfume Museum, where you can have your own personal and exclusive perfume made! The Chocolate Museum; a Medieval Museum; Gramado Crystals, a place that makes and sells crystal pieces made with the exact same technique as Vienna; Kur Hotel, a wonderful and complete spa; a golf club; a zoo; a Wax Museum; a place called "Super Carros", where you can test drive some famous cars like Camaro SS; a Vineyard with wine tasting; and so much more!... 

Mas o que escolhemos visitar, entre tantas atrações, foram dois lugares especialíssimos: O primeiro foi o Mundo Encantado. Criado em 1999 por Moacir Foss, tem quatro áreas diferentes com prédios em miniatura, um encanto sem dúvida!
But we chose to visit, among so many attractions, two very special places: The first one being "Mundo Encantado" (Enchanted World). Created in 1999 by Moacir Foss, it has 4 different areas with miniature buildings. An enchantment to see, that's for sure!

O outro foi o Mini Mundo. Com vários prédios lindos e até uma locomotiva que circula pela mini-cidade a céu aberto, tudo na escala 1:24, a MJ se sentiu uma gigante. Adorou!!! Será que você consegue achar a MJ na foto? 
The other one was Mini Mundo (Mini World). With several beautiful buildings and even a train set that runs around the mini-city - which is outdoors - and everything built in 1:24th scale, MJ felt like a giant. She loved it!! Can you find MJ in the picture?

Depois de tantas maravilhas, e muito chocolate, fomos descansar para a próxima etapa. Ah, que aventura!... 
After seeing so many wonders, and eating a lot of chocolate, we rested for the next step. Oh, what an adventure!...

Mini Jazzi World Trip (Day 3 in Brazil)

Puxa, que dia!.. Quanta novidade e agito!
Wow, what a day!... So much to do, so little time!

Acordamos bem cedo, pois tínhamos uma longa lista de atividades a cumprir. O Brasil é um país enorme, é impossível visitar tudo que há nele em uma simples viagem. Eu, que moro aqui há 47 anos, ainda não conheço tudo!... :)
We woke up very early, as we had a long 'to do' list. Brazil is a huge country, almost the size of a continent. It's impossible to know all the country in only one trip in a few days. Even I still don't know all of it, and I've been living here for 47 years...

Mas MJ e eu concordamos com o seguinte roteiro: vamos aproveitar ao máximo sua estadia e visitar uma cidade por dia!!! Serão 10 no total. Ainda há muitas outras cidades e lugares lindos a conhecer no Brasil, mas esta lista inicial é bem interessante, espero que vocês curtam também:
But MJ and I agreed on this: we decided to maximize her stay and visit one city a day!!! There will be 10. And there are many other cities and places to visit in Brazil, but this list below is very representative of the country and a good start, I hope you'll enjoy it too:

Assim que chegamos, passeamos de carro pela cidade. Foz do Iguaçu foi criada em 1914 e faz fronteira com dois outros países: Argentina e Paraguai. Tem mais de 300 mil habitantes e é uma das cidades com maior diversidade étnica e cultural no país (sim, é possível ser diferente e viver em paz!!!) :) Lá moram mais de 70 grupos étnicos de todas as partes do mundo, por exemplo: italianos, alemães, hispânicos (argentinos e paraguaios), chineses, ucranianos,  japoneses  e libaneses (é a segunda maior comunidade libanesa do Brasil) e a maior comunidade islâmica do Brasil.
As soon as we got to Foz do Iguaçu, we took a car tour around the city. It was founded in 1914 and borders two other countries: Argentina and Paraguai. It has over 300 thousand inhabitants and is one of the cities with the most diverse mix of ethnicity and different cultures (yes, it IS possible to be different and live in peace together!!!) :) More than 70 different ethnic groups from all over the world live there, like: Italian, German, Hispanics (Argentinians and Paraguayans), Chinese, Ucranian, Japanese, Lebanese (it's the second largest Lebanese community in Brazil) and the largest Muslim community in Brazil.

We made a quick stop at a gems store. MJ was so impressed by the size of the amethysts for sale that she insisted on posing inside one!

Mas nosso objetivo maior lá mesmo era conhecer as famosas Cataratas do Iguaçu. É um local impressionante! Clique no link para ler mais a respeito. Primeiro fomos na passarela ver as quedas d'água. MJ estava tão animada que nem queria esperar que eu tirasse fotos: "Vamos logo!!!", chamava ela...
But our main goal there was to visit the famous "Iguaçu Falls". It's very impressive! Click on the link on the name to read more about it (the page is in English). First we took 'tour of the track', were we could see the falls from a safe distance, yet close enough. MJ was so excited she wouldn't even wait for me to take pictures: "Come on, let's go!!!", she kept calling...

Ela viu uns botes com pessoas nas águas e, surpreendendo-me com sua coragem e audácia, quis ir em um também. Eu topei na hora, porque também sempre quis fazer um passeio destes, rsrs... O barulho das águas é impressionante, e há um vapor resultante da queda por todo lado. Vale a pena, é muito emocionante!
Then she saw some 'lifeboats' (they looked like that from the distance...) down on water with people in and when I told her those were boat tours she insisted on taking one too, which totally surprised me by her courage and audacity. I agreed because, to be honest, I've always wanted to take that tour too... lol! The noise all that volume of water falling down makes is unbelievable, and there is a mist all around as a result of that. It's so remarkable, you should go too some day!

Depois, para acalmarmos um pouco de tantas emoções, fomos conhecer o Parque das Aves. Lá tem diversas aves tropicais, que não ficam presas em gaiolas. Há araras de todos os tipos e aves que eu nem conhecia. A ave favorita da MJ acabou sendo o Tucano. No começo ela ficou com receio de chegar perto, por causa do tamanho do bico dele, e sendo ela tão pequenina... Mas quando eu falei que eles só comem frutas, ela perdeu o receio e sentou quietinha no gradil e eles foram se aproximando. Inesquecível!
When the boat tour was finished, we needed to go to a more 'zen' place to calm down a little. So we visited the "Bird Park". There are lots of exotic birds there. And they are not kept in cages. There are all kinds of Macaws and other birds I have never heard about before. MJ's favorite bird ended up being the Toucan. At first she hesitated getting near one, due to the size of their beak and her small size... But when I told her they only eat fruit, she lost fear and sat quietly on the handrail. They got closer and closer. Brave girl! An unforgettable scene!

Bem, mas a noite foi chegando, o frio apertando e voltamos para o hotel. Amanhã, mais uma cidade!!!
Well, the sun set, it got colder, and we headed back to the hotel. Tomorrow, a new city waits for us!!!

Depois do susto que passou na alfândega e as 3 semanas que ficou "de castigo" por lá, MJ merece um tratamento de princesa! 
After spending 3 weeks isolated, having little more than bread and water, MJ does deserve to be treated like a princess! 

Deixamos ela dormir até mais tarde, para recuperar o sono. E ainda teve direito a um belo café da manhã servido na cama, mordomia muito merecida!!! 
We decided to let her sleep in, to recover from all the stress. And she also deserved to have breakfast in bed, don't you think?...

Depois preparamos um belo banho de espuma para ela relaxar ainda mais e se preparar para o dia, cheio de novidades. O roupão de banho e as pantufas, que ela vai levar consigo, foram um presente que ganhei da Celeste Santos e estavam guardados esperando o momento certo de serem usados. Ninguém melhor do que a MJ para usá-los aqui e no mundo afora...
We prepared a delicious bubble bath for her to relax even further and to get ready for the day ahead, full of activities and new things to try. The bath robe and the slippers were a gift by Celeste Santos some time ago. They've been waiting for the perfect person to wear them and MJ totally qualifies! They'll be our gift to her to bring along her world trip.

Daí foi passar o restinho da manhã e uma boa parte da tarde na casa da melhor amiga da Moonflower a Laura (meu alter-ego mais recente, rsrs),. Tomaram suco de melancia, sorvete napolitano (creme, morango e chocolate) junto com salada de frutas. 
Then she spent the rest of the morning and half of the afternoon at Moonflower's BBF, Laura (my most recent alter-ego) :) . They had lots of watermelon juice and 'Napolitan' ice cream (a mix of strawberry, vanilla & chocolate) with fruit salad for desert.

 Depois de tanta comida, deu um soninho à tarde. Não tirei foto da MJ na rede, mas ela bem que tirou um cochilinho... rsrs....
After all that food, of course they got a little sleepy. Too bad I forgot to take a picture of MJ taking a nap in the hammock, lol.... 

Depois levamos a MJ para conhecer um pouco da cidade.

Ela adorou conhecer o Mercado Municipal. Um prédio da década de 1950, totalmente restaurado e reformado, e que agora abriga bares legais, apresentações musicais, e várias lojas que vendem coisas típicas da região: comida, artesanato e cachaça. É com a cachaça que se faz a caipirinha, mas a MJ ainda não experimentou. Um pouco de novidade de cada vez, rsrs...
Her favorite place was the 'Mercado Municipal'. The building is from the 1950's, and it's well preserved. Now it has a restaurant, some cool bars, and often hosts some music shows. There we can also find typical regional products: food, crafts and 'cachaça' (an alcoholic beverage similar to rum, but different). Cachaça is used to prepare 'Caipirinha', a typical Brazilian drink. MJ hasn't tried it yet, but soon!... ;)

Gostaria de mandar um pouco de tudo às próximas anfitriãs, mas a MJ não passaria com essas coisas nas alfândegas, já pensou?...
I wish I could send a little bit of all those to the next hostesses, but MJ would't get through customs with all that in her luggage... and once is enough, poor girl!...

No final da tarde o tempo fechou, com muito vento e chuva forte! Então voltamos para casa para ela se preparar para viajar. A partir de amanhã vai conhecer um pouco mais do Brasil: será uma cidade por dia nos próximos dias antes dela partir. Está animadíssima!
By the end of the afternoon the weather changed dramatically: very windy and a storm! So we headed back home so she could get ready for the next step: starting tomorrow, she will visit a city a day until she leaves the country. She's absolutely thrilled!
