Kit praia - beach kit

Fiz uns moldes de chinelos em miniatura, e usando biscuit e pintando, fiz uns chinelinhos muito lindos! Aí não resisti e fiz algumas sacolas de praia para combinar com cada par... 
I've recently made some molds for flip-flops in 1/12th scale, and using cold porcelain I made some, painted each pair a different color. Of course I could not resist and made a different tote bag to match each one...

Ontem tive uma grata surpresa. Lembram das mini-pessoas que fiz na escala 1:35, representando o Conde e a Condessa de Araruama, para a maquete do solar deles feita pelo Mateus? Então, recebi algumas fotos deles lá no solar, fiquei tão feliz! Parecia uma mamãe orgulhosa, rsrs...
Yesterday I had a very pleasant surprise. Do you remember the mini-people I made in 1/35th scale, representing Count and Countess of Araruama, to populate 'their' Manor, made by Mateus? Well, yesterday I got some pictures of them at the manor, I was so thrilled! I felt like a proud mommy, lol...

Uma cama especial - A Special Bed

Sei que tenho andado bem quietinha, quase sem postar, mas questões de saúde na família andaram tomando meu tempo o que me manteve meio longe das minis... Mas agora as coisas começaram a voltar ao normal e pude me dedicar a uma criação especial...
I know it's been quite a while since I posted, and that I've been quiet and not done much miniature this year, but some health issues in the family have been demanding my attention... Well, things are finally getting back to normal and I could spend some time creating a special piece...

Esta cama irá em breve para os Estados Unidos, onde será leiloada para levantar fundos para um programa muito importante para quem ama miniaturas. Daqui a alguns meses darei maiores informações a respeito... :)
This bed will soon go to the US, where it will be auctioned in a fundraising event, for a really wonderful program for those of us who love miniatures. I'll give you more details about it in a few months... :)

Era uma cama vendida assim em lojas de miniatura. Bonitinha, mas achei que faltava algo nela...
Originally it was a regular 1/12 bed, sold in miniature stores. Cute already, but I thought something was missing...

Então "despi" a cama, repintei, usando a técnica 'Provençal', onde algumas partes são lixadas dando um ar de "antigo" e "gasto", mas com muito charme. Refiz toda a parte de roupa de cama, e ficou assim:
So I 'stripped' the bed, repainted giving it a 'Shabby Chick' look, where some parts are worn out - which gives it an 'old' and 'weathered' look, but very charming. I gave it new linen and this is the result:

Pequenas pessoas - Little people

Um amigo meu, Mateus Fragoso, fez um trabalho fantástico de uma maquete de um antigo solar da sua cidade. Atualmente este solar está bem deteriorado, precisando de uma restauração. E esta maquete faz parte de um grande esforço conjunto da cidade para a restauração de sua história.
A friend of mine, Mateus Fragoso, made a fantastic scale model of an old manor of his city. Nowadays it's in pretty bad shape, in desperate need for a full restoration. And his model is part of a huge collective effort of concerned citizens of that city to restore part of its history.

Bem, ele me pediu para fazer bonecos do Conde e da Condessa de Araruama, que construriram e viveram no solar na segunda metade do século 19. Mandou-me algumas fotos, mas a escala era muito pequena: 1:34!
Well, the thing is that he asked me to make scale figures of the Count and Contess of Araruama, who built and lived in that manor in the second half of 19th Century. He even sent me some pictures of them. The problem is that the scale was so small... 1/34th!

Nossa, nunca havia trabalhado com bonecos nessa escala! Logo de início já sabia que não poderia usar "cabelo" como fiz nos meus personagens da loja, nem tecido de verdade para suas roupas: nessa escala o tecido, mesmo a seda, não teria caimento e ficaria muito artificial! Teriam que ser esculpidos!... 
Wow, I had never worked on human figures in that scale! Right up front I knew I wouldn't be able to use "hair" as I did with the characters in my store, nor real fabric for their clothes: in such small scale any fabric, even silk, would not have proper draping and it would look way off-scale! They'd have to be sculpted!....

Mas.... ó drama! Não sei esculpir gente tão bem assim ainda mais numa escala tão pequena!!! Mesmo assim, aceitei o desafio! :)
But... oh my! I cannot sculpt people that well, specially in such a small scale!!! Anyhow, I accepted the challenge! :)

Consegui encontrar em um site de plastimodelismo na Ucrânia (!) algumas figuras que tinham potencial. Depois de 2 meses de espera até a alfândega resolver liberar minha encomenda, comecei a trabalhar neles...
I managed to find an online store in Ucrânia (!) which had some 1:35 figures to sell, and I found some similar to what I had in mind. After 2 months waiting for our customs to release my parcel for delivery, I started working on them...

Nessa foto estão parcialmente montados, sem cola ainda. Já comecei a trabalhar neles, removendo parte do cabelo dela para ver se era fácil (a figura original usava um chapéu de uniforme de exército)
In this picture, they are partially assembled, no glue used yet. I had already started some work, removing part of her hair, just to see if I could (the original figure was wearing a soldier's hat)

Nesta, já removi a gravata dele - pois o conde usava gravata borboleta! e fiz alguns ajustes no paletó. Não vai ficar idêntico ao da foto do conde, pois este está fechado... :(
In this one, I had already removed the original tie - as the count seemed to prefer bow ties in his pictures! and I also made some small adjustments to the jacket. It won't look like the one in the picture of the Count, as this one is buttoned up... :(

Aqui a figura feminina original, também já com algum trabalho feito, removendo os "excessos"...
Here you can see the original female figure, also some 'sculpting' work already done, removing all "excesses"...

Tentei usar fimo, mas plástico e o calor necessário para curar a cerâmica plástica não combinaram... O ideal seria usar a massa "putty", própria para isso! Mas esqueci de encomendar na mesma loja e aqui na minha cidade não achei. Teria que encomendar e esperar de novo, e isso não ia dar certo! Então o jeito foi usar massa Epóxi, aquela que misturamos duas partes para consertar furos de canos, rsrs... Aqui estão as figuras, já com os "acréscimos" esculpidos. 
I tried using fimo, but that kind of plastic and the heat necessary to set the polymer clay didn't get along... The ideal would be to use "putty" clay, very commonly used for that kind of work! But I forgot to order from the same store where I got the figures, and I couldn't find it here in my city. I would have to order online and wait again, and that wouldn't work now! So I had to use epoxy clay, that kind we mix two different parts and it's commonly used to fix leakings under the sink, lol... Here you can see the figures, all "additions" already sculpted onto them.

Foi um trabalho feito em vários dias, camada por camada. O epóxi é macio e era preciso esperar uma camada secar para trabalhar em outra, mesmo que fosse em outro local. Senão, como a peça é pequena, ao segurar na mão desmanchava todo o trabalho que tinha tido!
It was a slow gradual work, which took several days to be completed, working layer by layer. Epoxy is soft and I had to wait for each recently worked layer to dry/harden completely to be able to work on the next one, even if it was on another part of the figure. They are so small that I'd ruin the previous work just by holding the piece!

Um pouco de inspiração - Some inspiration

Entre demandas familiares e um trabalho delicado, que nunca fiz antes e que tem me tomado um certo tempo, sei que tenho postado pouco. Mas encontrei esta linda estória e achei altamente inspiradora, por isso quis compartilhar com vocês. Espero que gostem!
Between errands, chores and a very delicate miniature work I have never done before and which has been taking some time to complete, I know I haven't posted as often as I should. But I have recently come across this beautiful inspirational story, and I decided to share with you. Enjoy!

Um homem tinha dois potes grandes, com os quais buscava água e os levava, cada um pendurado na ponta de uma vara que carregava nos ombros.
A man had two large pots which he used to bring home some water, each hung on the ends of a pole, which he carried across his neck.

Um dos potes tinha uma rachadura, enquanto o outro era perfeito e sempre levava toda a carga de água. No final da longa caminhada do riacho até a casa, o pote rachado chegava só com metade da sua carga.
One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

Por dois anos inteiros isso acontecia diariamente, com o homem trazendo somente um pote e meio de água.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the man bringing home only one and a half pots of water.

Obviamente o pote perfeito estava orgulhoso de seus feitos. Mas o pobre pote rachado sentia-se envergonhado da sua imperfeição e que só conseguia entregar metade da água que seu mestre colocava nele. Depois de 2 anos do que ele percebia como uma falha terrível, um dia ele resolveu falar com seu mestre no caminho: "Estou muito envergonhado de mim mesmo, porque esta rachadura em mim faz a água vazar por todo o caminho de volta para casa".
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do. After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the man one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

O homem sorrriu: "Você notou que tem flores no seu lado da estrada, mas não no lado onde vai o outro pote? Isto é porque eu sempre soube do seu pequeno defeito, então plantei sementes de flores no seu lado do caminho. Então todo dia, enquanto voltávamos para casa, era a sua água que regava essas flores. Por dois anos pude colher essas lindas flores e decorar a mesa. Se você não fosse do jeito que é, não haveria toda essa beleza no nosso caminho e enfeitando a casa."
The man smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?" "That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them." "For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Cada um de nós tem seus próprios 'defeitos'. Mas são as rachaduras e os defeitos que cada um de nós tem que tornam nossas vidas tão interessantes e as fazem valer a pena. Só precisamos aprender a usar essas características de modo positivo.
Each of us has our own unique 'flaw'. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

Pet Shop Kit

Yes, I know I've been making lots of kits lately, but I'm trying to declutter my studio, tackling all UFOs (UnFinished Objects) and NESYs (Not Even Started Yet) I have. There will be lots of minis here this year, stay tuned! :)
