Mini Jazzi World Trip (Day 3 in Brazil)

Puxa, que dia!.. Quanta novidade e agito!
Wow, what a day!... So much to do, so little time!

Acordamos bem cedo, pois tínhamos uma longa lista de atividades a cumprir. O Brasil é um país enorme, é impossível visitar tudo que há nele em uma simples viagem. Eu, que moro aqui há 47 anos, ainda não conheço tudo!... :)
We woke up very early, as we had a long 'to do' list. Brazil is a huge country, almost the size of a continent. It's impossible to know all the country in only one trip in a few days. Even I still don't know all of it, and I've been living here for 47 years...

Mas MJ e eu concordamos com o seguinte roteiro: vamos aproveitar ao máximo sua estadia e visitar uma cidade por dia!!! Serão 10 no total. Ainda há muitas outras cidades e lugares lindos a conhecer no Brasil, mas esta lista inicial é bem interessante, espero que vocês curtam também:
But MJ and I agreed on this: we decided to maximize her stay and visit one city a day!!! There will be 10. And there are many other cities and places to visit in Brazil, but this list below is very representative of the country and a good start, I hope you'll enjoy it too:

1)   Uberlândia, onde moro.
2)   Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná
3)   Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul
4)   São Paulo, capital
5)   Rio de Janeiro, capital
6)   Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais
7)   Salvador, Bahia
8)   Natal, Rio Grande do Norte
9)   São Luís, Maranhão
10) Manaus, Amazonas

Assim que chegamos, passeamos de carro pela cidade. Foz do Iguaçu foi criada em 1914 e faz fronteira com dois outros países: Argentina e Paraguai. Tem mais de 300 mil habitantes e é uma das cidades com maior diversidade étnica e cultural no país (sim, é possível ser diferente e viver em paz!!!) :) Lá moram mais de 70 grupos étnicos de todas as partes do mundo, por exemplo: italianos, alemães, hispânicos (argentinos e paraguaios), chineses, ucranianos,  japoneses  e libaneses (é a segunda maior comunidade libanesa do Brasil) e a maior comunidade islâmica do Brasil.
As soon as we got to Foz do Iguaçu, we took a car tour around the city. It was founded in 1914 and borders two other countries: Argentina and Paraguai. It has over 300 thousand inhabitants and is one of the cities with the most diverse mix of ethnicity and different cultures (yes, it IS possible to be different and live in peace together!!!) :) More than 70 different ethnic groups from all over the world live there, like: Italian, German, Hispanics (Argentinians and Paraguayans), Chinese, Ucranian, Japanese, Lebanese (it's the second largest Lebanese community in Brazil) and the largest Muslim community in Brazil.

We made a quick stop at a gems store. MJ was so impressed by the size of the amethysts for sale that she insisted on posing inside one!

Mas nosso objetivo maior lá mesmo era conhecer as famosas Cataratas do Iguaçu. É um local impressionante! Clique no link para ler mais a respeito. Primeiro fomos na passarela ver as quedas d'água. MJ estava tão animada que nem queria esperar que eu tirasse fotos: "Vamos logo!!!", chamava ela...
But our main goal there was to visit the famous "Iguaçu Falls". It's very impressive! Click on the link on the name to read more about it (the page is in English). First we took 'tour of the track', were we could see the falls from a safe distance, yet close enough. MJ was so excited she wouldn't even wait for me to take pictures: "Come on, let's go!!!", she kept calling...

Ela viu uns botes com pessoas nas águas e, surpreendendo-me com sua coragem e audácia, quis ir em um também. Eu topei na hora, porque também sempre quis fazer um passeio destes, rsrs... O barulho das águas é impressionante, e há um vapor resultante da queda por todo lado. Vale a pena, é muito emocionante!
Then she saw some 'lifeboats' (they looked like that from the distance...) down on water with people in and when I told her those were boat tours she insisted on taking one too, which totally surprised me by her courage and audacity. I agreed because, to be honest, I've always wanted to take that tour too... lol! The noise all that volume of water falling down makes is unbelievable, and there is a mist all around as a result of that. It's so remarkable, you should go too some day!

Depois, para acalmarmos um pouco de tantas emoções, fomos conhecer o Parque das Aves. Lá tem diversas aves tropicais, que não ficam presas em gaiolas. Há araras de todos os tipos e aves que eu nem conhecia. A ave favorita da MJ acabou sendo o Tucano. No começo ela ficou com receio de chegar perto, por causa do tamanho do bico dele, e sendo ela tão pequenina... Mas quando eu falei que eles só comem frutas, ela perdeu o receio e sentou quietinha no gradil e eles foram se aproximando. Inesquecível!
When the boat tour was finished, we needed to go to a more 'zen' place to calm down a little. So we visited the "Bird Park". There are lots of exotic birds there. And they are not kept in cages. There are all kinds of Macaws and other birds I have never heard about before. MJ's favorite bird ended up being the Toucan. At first she hesitated getting near one, due to the size of their beak and her small size... But when I told her they only eat fruit, she lost fear and sat quietly on the handrail. They got closer and closer. Brave girl! An unforgettable scene!

Bem, mas a noite foi chegando, o frio apertando e voltamos para o hotel. Amanhã, mais uma cidade!!!
Well, the sun set, it got colder, and we headed back to the hotel. Tomorrow, a new city waits for us!!!

Mini Jazzi World Trip (Day 2 in Brazil)

Depois do susto que passou na alfândega e as 3 semanas que ficou "de castigo" por lá, MJ merece um tratamento de princesa! 
After spending 3 weeks isolated, having little more than bread and water, MJ does deserve to be treated like a princess! 

Deixamos ela dormir até mais tarde, para recuperar o sono. E ainda teve direito a um belo café da manhã servido na cama, mordomia muito merecida!!! 
We decided to let her sleep in, to recover from all the stress. And she also deserved to have breakfast in bed, don't you think?...

Depois preparamos um belo banho de espuma para ela relaxar ainda mais e se preparar para o dia, cheio de novidades. O roupão de banho e as pantufas, que ela vai levar consigo, foram um presente que ganhei da Celeste Santos e estavam guardados esperando o momento certo de serem usados. Ninguém melhor do que a MJ para usá-los aqui e no mundo afora...
We prepared a delicious bubble bath for her to relax even further and to get ready for the day ahead, full of activities and new things to try. The bath robe and the slippers were a gift by Celeste Santos some time ago. They've been waiting for the perfect person to wear them and MJ totally qualifies! They'll be our gift to her to bring along her world trip.

Daí foi passar o restinho da manhã e uma boa parte da tarde na casa da melhor amiga da Moonflower a Laura (meu alter-ego mais recente, rsrs),. Tomaram suco de melancia, sorvete napolitano (creme, morango e chocolate) junto com salada de frutas. 
Then she spent the rest of the morning and half of the afternoon at Moonflower's BBF, Laura (my most recent alter-ego) :) . They had lots of watermelon juice and 'Napolitan' ice cream (a mix of strawberry, vanilla & chocolate) with fruit salad for desert.

 Depois de tanta comida, deu um soninho à tarde. Não tirei foto da MJ na rede, mas ela bem que tirou um cochilinho... rsrs....
After all that food, of course they got a little sleepy. Too bad I forgot to take a picture of MJ taking a nap in the hammock, lol.... 

Depois levamos a MJ para conhecer um pouco da cidade. 
It was then time to have a city tour.

Ela adorou conhecer o Mercado Municipal. Um prédio da década de 1950, totalmente restaurado e reformado, e que agora abriga bares legais, apresentações musicais, e várias lojas que vendem coisas típicas da região: comida, artesanato e cachaça. É com a cachaça que se faz a caipirinha, mas a MJ ainda não experimentou. Um pouco de novidade de cada vez, rsrs...
Her favorite place was the 'Mercado Municipal'. The building is from the 1950's, and it's well preserved. Now it has a restaurant, some cool bars, and often hosts some music shows. There we can also find typical regional products: food, crafts and 'cachaça' (an alcoholic beverage similar to rum, but different). Cachaça is used to prepare 'Caipirinha', a typical Brazilian drink. MJ hasn't tried it yet, but soon!... ;)

Gostaria de mandar um pouco de tudo às próximas anfitriãs, mas a MJ não passaria com essas coisas nas alfândegas, já pensou?...
I wish I could send a little bit of all those to the next hostesses, but MJ would't get through customs with all that in her luggage... and once is enough, poor girl!...

No final da tarde o tempo fechou, com muito vento e chuva forte! Então voltamos para casa para ela se preparar para viajar. A partir de amanhã vai conhecer um pouco mais do Brasil: será uma cidade por dia nos próximos dias antes dela partir. Está animadíssima!
By the end of the afternoon the weather changed dramatically: very windy and a storm! So we headed back home so she could get ready for the next step: starting tomorrow, she will visit a city a day until she leaves the country. She's absolutely thrilled!

Doll Viajante - Mini Jazzi World Trip (now in Brazil)

Agora vou dar um tempinho na loja e recepcionar uma hóspede MUITO importante!!! VIP total!!! Ela é a Mini Jazzi! Eu sou a segunda anfitriã desta viajante para lá de especial, quanta honra!!! :)
Now I'll give the shop a break to host a VERY important guest!!! VIP indeed!!! Meet Mini Jazzi! I'm the second hostess of a long worldwide list to welcome this very special world traveler, what an honor!!! :)

A pobrezinha teve uma chegada bem atribulada no Brasil, ficou retida pela alfândega desde 3/9 e só conseguiu chegar aqui em casa ontem, que absurdo!!! Daqui a pouco conto mais sobre esta epopéia da Mini Jazzi...
The poor little girl had a very eventful arrival to Brazil: she was withheld by customs since Sep/3 and she only made it to my home yesterday, appalling!!! You'll soon read more about her saga to get here...

Bem, assim que ela chegou, foi direto para a minha Dollhouse, onde ficará hospedada durante sua curta estadia aqui. Ela não poderá ficar muito tempo para não atrasar ainda mais seu longo cronograma de viagem... :(
Anyhow, as soon as she got here she went straight to my Dollhouse, where she'll be staying while here. She can't stay too long in Brazil, though, not to delay her traveling schedule even further... :(

Mesmo cansadíssima desta longa e atribulada viagem, encontrou um tempinho para apreciar as tulipas que plantei há pouco tempo em jardineiras nas janelas do andar térreo da casa. Ficou admirada, pois não sabia que tulipas cresciam no Brasil. "Bem, não nesta região central, onde estamos. Mas no sul do Brasil, que tem um clima mais ameno, sim. Mas você sabe... em miniatura tudo é possível! Por isso amamos tanto as miniaturas, não é? ;)"
Even though she was totally worn down by this long and epic trip, she found a moment to enjoy the tulips I have recently planted in some window boxes of the ground floor. She was very surprised, as she didn't know tulips could grow in Brazil. "Well, not in this central area, actually. But in the South, where the weather is mild, yes, they do. But you know... in the miniature world anything is possible! That's why we love miniatures so much, right?  ;)"

Após refrescar-se, colocar as bagagens no quarto, Jazzi relaxa na sala com minha alter-ego, a MoonFlower (uma doll que fiz a partir de um kit + tutoriais de Dana Burton). Apesar de não ser sua bebida favorita, ela aceita uma cerveja bem gelada para combater o calor!
After freshening up and leaving her luggate in her room, Jazzi relaxes in the living room with my alter-ego MoonFlower (a doll I made from a kit by Dana Burton). Even though beer is not her favorite drink, she enjoyed the icy one offered, to cool down. It's been quite hot around here recently!

Bateu uma fome, depois da longa aventura, e as duas partem para a cozinha apreciar a farta refeição que MoonFlower havia preparado para sua ilustre visitante. Nada de carnes, pois MoonFlower e eu somos vegetarianas. Mas uma grande amiga já convidou-a para apreciar um típico churrasco brasileiro amanhã, aguardem!
Now they got hungry, as it's been a long adventure, and both go to the kitchen to enjoy a large meal previously prepared by MoonFlower when she heard Jazzi was finally arriving. No meat, though, as we (MoonFlower and me) are vegetarian. Don't worry, I've heard that a great friend has already invited Jazzi to a typical Brazilian barbecue lunch tomorrow, stay tuned!

Agora Mini Jazzi finalmente nos contou o que aconteceu na alfândega! Como ela viajou de uma forma um tanto inusitada para pessoas (veja a foto), eles achavam que ela era um 'contrabando', vejam vocês!!! Por mais que ela tentasse explicar que era legal, e até tentou mostrar seu passaporte, eles não quiseram acreditar. Também, estão sobrecarregados de serviço desde umas mudanças que aconteceram no começo do ano, e alguns agentes da PF estão de greve, então não estavam com muita boa-vontade não... E a coitadinha ficou isolada este tempo todo, esperando definirem sua situação. 
Now Mini Jazzi finally tells us what happened at customs! As she had to travel in a very special way due to her special size, they thought she was being 'smuggled' into the country, can you believe that!?! She did try to tell them she was legit, she even tried to show them her passport, visa and everything were in order, but as that document was too tiny for them, not used to minis, and as they were overloaded with work due to some changes since the beginning of this year, and with a strike of Federal agents, they didn't want to believe her... And poor little Jazzi was put in isolation until they had it all sorted out. She could have been held there for months, I've heard!... 

Quando eu soube que ela estava retida, chamei um grande amigo, de um outro grupo que participo, de micro-minis. Ele já me ajudou em outras ocasiões com o pessoal da alfândega e viaja pelo mundo ajudando os miniaturistas do grupo com este tipo de problema ou "lembrando-os" que coisas estranhas podem acontecer àqueles que abrem pacotes de troquinhas antes da hora (rsrs...). Trata-se do Vinny. Ele não gosta de tirar fotos, por causa da peculiaridade dos seus "serviços", mas tenho um desenho dele feito por um fã, há algum tempo...
When I heard about Mini Jazzi predicament, I called a great friend from another miniatures group I'm in. He has already helped me a couple of times, clearing at customs some boxes I had been expecting. He travels all around the world, like Mini Jazzi, but helping miniaturists from that group who might be having that kind of problem. Or 'reminding' participants that feel 'tempted' to open their boxes before due time that they shouldn't do that! Meet Vinny. He doesn't like to take pictures, due to the 'peculiar' nature of his 'services', but I still have a drawing made by a fan some time ago...  

Bem, o fato é que ele foi lá, "conversou" com os agentes e eles liberaram ela na hora! Eles sabem muito bem do que o Vinny é capaz, rsrs... Acho que a Mini Jazzi não terá mais problemas nos outros países, o Vinny me garantiu que irá abrir os caminhos para ela, "conversando" de antemão com os agentes das alfândegas dos outros países... ;)
Well, what happened is that he went there and "talked" to the agents and they cleared Jazzy right away! They know better than to upset Vinny, lol... Now I think Mini Jazzi won't have any more troubles at customs anywhere, as Vinny reassured me he me had already spread the word to all customs at the countries she's going to visit that if they try anything like that again he'll be on their heals before they can say "miniature"... ;)

Bem, já mais descansada e bem alimentada, Mini Jazzi correu para o computador e mandou uma mensagem para Jaz Ash, sua criadora, avisando que está tudo bem. E leu seus inúmeros emails que estavam esperando na caixa postal depois de tanto tempo isolada do mundo. Nem imagino como eu me sentiria nesta situação, pobrezinha!!!
Now, somehow recovered and well fed, Mini Jazzi ran to the laptop and sent a message to  Jaz Ash, her creator/mommy, letting her know that she finally arrived safe & sound. And also caught up with all the unread emails in her inbox. Can you imagine how many after all this time, isolated from the world? I can't even imagine how I would feel in her place, poor girl!!!

Mini Jazzi trocou as roupas para algo mais leve e que combina mais com o clima tropical e foi visitar meu quintal. Apresente-lhe o pé de acerola. Ela ficou impressionada ao saber que esta frutinha contém 10x mais vitamina C do que a mesma quantidade de laranja! Que pena que não é época, senão faria um belo suco para nossa hóspede...
Mini Jazzi changed into more comfortable and light clothes, to match the tropics, and I invited her to see the backyard. I showed her our acerola tree. She was impressed to learn that those little berries contain 10 times more vitamin C than the same amount of oranges! Too bad it's not time for them, or I'd have made her a nice jug of acerola juice...

Também se impressionou ao ver o pé de mexirica ponkan. Nem imaginava que era tão grande!... Mas ficou mais tranquila quando informei que os pássaros que constantemente a visitam e às vezes até fazem ninho nela são menores que a Jazzi (15cm...). Bem, nossa árvore deu poucos frutos este ano, mas tínhamos mexerica, bananas, abacaxi e várias outras frutas tropicais para Jazzi provar e curtir. 
She was also impressed to see how big a Ponkan tangerine tree is. She had no idea!... But she felt better when I told her that the birds who often come to it and sometimes even make nests on it are smaller than her (she's 6" tall). Well, our tree didn't produce much this year, but we do have lots of tangerine, bananas, pineapple and other tropical fruit for Jazzi to taste and enjoy.

Também conheceu meu 'filhão', o meu cachorro de 17 anos(!), o Garotão. Foi adotado das ruas em 2001 e é minha alegria até hoje!!! Ele cheirou ela um pouco, adorou seu perfume suave. Mas não se preocupem: com esta idade, ele só quer saber de 'gastar os dentes' se for com uma das comidas favoritas dele! Nem seus antigos brinquedos ele mastiga mais, rsrs...
Mini Jazzi also met my "son", my 17 years old(!) dog, Garotão (Big Boy). He was adopted in 2001 when I rescued him from the streets (his previous owner had died and the family abandoned him, so sad as he is so sweet!). He is my pride and joy! He smelled her (can't see much anymore), and really liked her delicate perfume. But do not worry: at this age, he will only 'use' his teeth on one of his favorite food! He won't even chew his old toys anymore... :)

Mas o que ela gostou mesmo foi do cantinho Provençal que criei há pouco tempo... Adorou o vinho e os queijos franceses!... Ela, que só esperava encontrar tais regalias quando chegasse à Europa, ficou muito surpresa. "Bem, é que sou filha de francês, então... procuro unir o melhor de dois mundos, certo?" :)
What Mini Jazzi really liked was the Provençal corner I created a few weeks ago... She really loved the French cheese and wine. As she was only expecting to taste those delicacies when she arrived to Europe, she was really surprised. "Well, as my father is French, I try to get the best of both worlds, right?" :)

Viajando para o passado - Visiting the Past (IV)

Mas e aí, ficamos só na pesquisa histórica ou tem alguma coisa do ambiente para mostrar? SIM! :)
So, is this going to be all talk or are we going to see some action too? YES! :)

Mas para isto é preciso mostrar ainda um pouquinho de história. Ou de estilo? Bem, vou falar muito brevemente do estilo arquitetônico que predominou na época (final do século 18 e início do século 20) e que vou tentar reproduzir alguns elementos na minha loja.
But to do so I still have to mention (very briefly!) another historical aspect. Or historical style? Well, I'll have to point out the architectural style that was predominant back then (end of the 19th century) and I'll try hard to reproduce some aspects in miniature on my store. 

O estilo arquitetônico predominante na época era bem eclético. Foi uma releitura de vários outros estilos anteriores, chamados então de "neo" alguma-coisa. O Brasil sempre foi bom em ecletismo, absorver influências de várias fontes e incorporá-las todas misturadas com harmonia no seu dia-a-dia!
The predominant architectural style back then was very eclectic. The main styles until then were all revisited, being re-named "neo"-something. Brazil is very good at this, indeed: We love to absorb influences from different sources and then incorporate them all mixed together harmoniously!

Quando comecei o projeto, só havia algumas poucas restrições: tamanho mínimo, que teria que ter fachada fixa e a parte de trás aberta, e também tinha que ter telhado. Meu mentor (Angelo Pinheiro) e eu construímos uma estrutura básica em MDF um pouco maior do que o mínimo (uns 5cm maior, mas só um andar). 
When I started the project in 2009, there were only few restrictions: minimum size, fixed front and open back. A roof was also a must. My mentor back then (Angelo Pinheiro) and I built our basic structure in MDF, a little larger than minimum (by about 2 inches), and we decided on one-story building.

The slant on the roof was a combination of mathematical realism and making it possible to see inside.

Não lembro a utilidade destas faixas no interior. Vou remover porque quero dar mais espaço ao sótão.
I do not remember why we placed those strips. They'll be removed. I want a lower ceiling. Not so correct, but will give me a bigger attic to work with. 

Hoje em dia eu teria feito menor em largura e profundidade, mas teria optado por fazer dois andares. Adoraria fazer as janelas do piso superior com balcões de ferro, são lindos! O de baixo seria a loja em si e o de cima um depósito, escritório e banheiro. Mas como a estrutura já está montada, vou trabalhar a partir dela como está.
If I would build it from scratch now, I'd make it a little smaller, but a two-story store. I would love to make the upper floor windows, with wrought iron balconies, they are so beautiful! The ground floor would be the store itself and the other one would be a mix of storage and office and it would also have a WC.

Não sou especialista em arquitetura, portanto não conheço os termos técnicos dos elementos arquitetônicos. Se alguém souber, por favor me avise para que eu possa incorporar aqui, ok?
Also note that I do not have a background in architecture. Therefore, I'm not familiar with the official names for the architectural elements. If you know the exact names, please, do tell me so that I can add them here, ok?

1) As portas eram de madeira, abertura dupla, com relevos (retangulares)
1) Doors were really tall, wooden, double and with some rectangular panels. 

2) As portas poderiam terminar em arco ou retas. Escolhi em arco, porque acho mais bonitas. Mas hoje eu faria reta, pois é bem mais fácil cortar todos os elementos que irão nela... :)
2) The doors would culminate in arches or straight. Back in 2009I chose arches, because I like them better. But today I might have chosen straight / rectangular, as those are easier to cut and work with!... :)

3) Geralmente as lojas tinham um toldo na frente. Até fiz um no estudo preeliminar em 1:25, mas vou deixar sem para a fachada aparecer melhor. 
3) The stores usually had an awning. I even made one on my preliminary study, in 1:25th scale, but I won't do it now to allow a clear view of the facade. 

4) as laterais tinham frisos de cima a baixo. Vou procurar reproduzi-los.
4) the side walls to the doors usually had some "ribs", from top to bottom. I'll try to make them.

5) Havia uma "saia", com textura, na maioria das construções. Vou procurar reproduzir também.
5) Buildings often had a kind of "skirt", texturized. I'll try to keep those too. 

6) As cornijas eram bem comuns, também estará presente na minha fachada.

7) A platibanda (faixa horizontal (muro ou grade) que emoldura a parte superior de um edifício e que tem a função de esconder o telhado) também já faz parte da estrutura.
7) A straight pladband (horizontal 'strip' on top of a building aiming to hide the roof) is already part of the original structure I'll be working on. 

8) Era uma época efervescente em termos de construções na cidade. Muitos prédios eram construídos e vários demolidos. De um lado vou fazer um acabamento de tijolo aparente, bem caprichado. E vou aplicar alguns anúncios como os das fotos. Do outro vou tentar reproduzir uma parede que antes era comum com uma construção que fora demolida (ver foto)
8) Those were changing times. Many buildings were being built and many other ones were torn down.  To reflect that, one side will have nicely applied bricks, as if it was on a corner, and on the other one I'll try to replicate the look it would have if the neighbor building had been demolished (see picture)

9) A placa com o nome da loja também estará presente!
9) There will be a 'panel' or 'board' (?) with the name of the store!

Viajando para o passado - Visiting the Past (III)

Contextualizando a loja: a cidade de São Paulo por volta de 1890... 
Still some more history background to my store: Sao Paulo (city) around 1890... 

Imagine que você mora numa cidade de uns 30 mil habitantes. Conhecida mais por ser 'parada obrigatória' de viajantes entre a capital do país e o interior do que por suas próprias qualidades... É uma cidade com um bom comércio: claro, afinal toda a mercadoria vinda tanto do interior quanto da capital passa por ela! Vários casarões bonitos, pois fazendeiros (barões) têm casas na cidade também. Mas sem muita infra-estrutura. Ruas estreitas, de traçado irregular e sem planejamento, com cerca de 8 metros de distância entre a parede das casas de um lado até a parede das construções do outro. Praticamente sem calçadas, sem esgoto encanado ou tratamento do esgoto. Os dejetos humanos são lançados na rua, sem cuidados maiores. A cidade tem quatro grandes e lindos rios, mas os mais próximos do centro já cheiram bem mal, por causa do esgoto lançado sem tratamento e do sangue que vem do abatedouro, não muito longe. As ruas, quando recebem algum tipo de acabamento, é de pedra irregular. À noite as ruas são escuras, pois não há iluminação pública ou ela é mínima. Quem quer se arriscar, deve levar sua lamparina. De preferência, evitar sair sozinho... Já nas noites de lua cheia, o movimento é maior, principalmente na zona boêmia...
Imagine you live in a city which has about 30,000 inhabitants. It's better known for being a 'stop' on the way between the capital and the countryside, or between the harbor/docks and the countryside... It has good commerce: of course, after all, all merchandise that comes from or to the country or the capital or the harbors must pass through it! It also has some very nice colonial manors, as wealthy farmers like to keep a house in the city too.  But it doesn't have a good infrastructure. The streets are narrow (about 26 feet from wall to wall), sinuous, poorly paved and most have no sidewalk whatsoever. No sewer system, all dirt is thrown on the streets... The city has four beautiful and large rivers, but the ones closest to downtown are already very smelly due to untreated sewage and blood that comes from the slaughterhouse, not too far away. Most streets have no lights at night, so it's very risky to go out at night. Be sure to bring a hurricane lamp along if you must! During the full moon, more people venture on the streets.

Aí imagine que chega nesta cidade pacata e tranquila um 'profeta' ou um 'viajante do futuro'. E avisa a todos que em muito pouco tempo esta cidade:
Then imagine that a 'prophet' or a 'visitor from the future' arrives to this peaceful and quiet village. And he starts to alert people that very soon this place: 
* crescerá tanto e tão rapidamente [1872 =  30.000 habitantes; 1890 =  65.000 habitantes (2x); 1900 = 240.000 habitantes (8x)] que se tornará a maior do Brasil. Não! A maior de toda a América do Sul!!! [Está sempre entre as 10 maiores do mundo!]
* will grow so much and so fast [1872 =  30,000 inhabitants; 1890 =  65,000 inhabitants (2x); 1900 = 240,000 inhabitants (8x)] that it will become the biggest one in Brazil, even bigger than the capital. No! It will become the biggest one in all South America!!! [It's always listed among the top 10 largest cities in the world!]

* Crescerá tanto que não se verá mais divisa entre ela e as cidades vizinhas, tornando tudo uma só "grande cidade". [Grande São Paulo = São Paulo + Santo André + São Bernardo do Campo + São Caetano + Mauá]
* will grow so much that there will be no discernible frontier between this city and its neighbor towns, being all of them considered one "mega-city" altogether. [Great São Paulo = São Paulo + Santo André + São Bernardo do Campo + São Caetano + Mauá]
* Este 'visionário' aconselha que abram ruas mais largas, que façam que todas as novas casas e construções tenham estacionamento ou garagem, pois milhões de automóveis (carros sem cavalos) circularão na cidade! [mais de 7 milhões, gerando engarrafamentos que chegam a somar mais de 240 km]
* This 'visionary' man advises people to open larger streets, to make the new homes with a garage and the new buildings with a parking lot, because there will be millions of automobiles ('horse-less' coaches) running around! [more than 7 million, causing traffic jams as long as 150 miles, if all streets were combined]
* Que tratem o esgoto senão os quatro rios da cidade [Tamanduateí, Anhangabaú, Pinheiros e Tietê] morrerão e ficarão tão sujos e fedidos que dois deles [Tamanduateí, Anhangabaú] terão que ser tampados e correrão no subterrâneo para sempre! (espero que não...)
* He advises them to treat sewage properly, or else the four main rivers of the city [Tamanduateí, Anhangabaú, Pinheiros and Tietê] will become so dirty they will no longer bear life, and two of them will get so smelly [Tamanduateí, Anhangabaú] that they'll be covered and will run underground for good! (hope not...)
* Diz ainda que a cidade terá faculdades que serão referência em toda a América Latina e centros de estudos para onde virão estudantes de todo o país. [naquela época os jovens de famílias ricas iam estudar em Paris ou Portugal]
* He also says that the city will host very important and respected universities and scientific centers, and students will come from all over the country to learn there. [young men of wealthy families back then would normally go to Paris or Portugal to study and get a degree]
* Que terá grandes hospitais, fábricas imensas. 
* will have great and renowned hospitals, and huge factories.
* Que logo chegarão trabalhadores de muitos países, alguns tão distantes quanto o Japão. [A maior colônia de japoneses e descendentes fora do Japão fica em São Paulo: capital + estado]
* workers from many different countries will soon arrive, some from as far as Japan, on the other side of the planet. [The largest community of Japanese-descendant people is in Sao Paulo (capital + state)]
* E que será um poderoso centro cultural e econômico do país...
* and will soon become a powerful and influential cultural and economical center to the country...

As mudanças já começavam a aparecer: a foto de cima é de 1867, e a de baixo, de  1887

O que será que teriam feito com este 'visionário'? Acho que o internariam no "Hospital dos loucos", ou hospício... rsrs...
What do you think the people of that city would have done to that 'visionary man'? I think they would have committed him to the 'madhouse' ("Hospital dos loucos"), or hospice... hehe...

Mas este visionário estaria coberto de razão....
But this imaginary visionary man would have been so right!...

Então já sabemos que: 
1) os imigrantes estrangeiros chegaram no final do século XIX para suprir a deficiência de mão de obra qualificada causado pela abolição da escravatura em 1888
2) A cidade de São Paulo (onde minha loja fictícia se 'localiza') vivia um momento de expansão, onde tudo mudaria: o traçado das ruas, a arquitetura dos prédios, a infra-estrutura, tudo!

So, we already know that: 
1) foreign immigrants arrived by the end of the 19th century to supply an increasing demand for qualified labor, generated by the end of slavery in 1888
2) The city of Sao Paulo (where my fictitious store is 'located') was living a moment of fast growth, and everything was about to change forever: the streets design, the architecture, the infra-structure, the culture, everything!
