É carnaval... Mas eu não curto muito, fazer o quê? :)
Mas nem por isto deixei de 'brincar' e criar muito! Passei os últimos 3 dias fazendo flores. Isto mesmo!!!
O arranjo de lírios é um kit que comprei ainda em 2010 em Chicago também da Kimberly Hammer, com quem fiz o workshop do laguinho.
As violetas são 100% minhas. Criação, design e execução. Gostou? :)

It's Carnival. The most anticipated holiday in Brazil. But I'm not really into it, what can I say?... :)
But that doesn't mean I didn't 'play' or create a lot! I spent the last few days making flowers. That's right!!!
The lilies arrangement is a kit I had bought still in Chicago in 2010 from Kimberly Hammer, the same I took that little lake workshop.
The violets though are 100% mine. Creation, design and execution. What do you think? :)

Finalmente concluído - UFO finally finished! :)

Quando fui a Chicago, em abril de 2010, fiz um workshop com Kimberly Hammer, onde aprendíamos a fazer algumas plantas e montar um mini-cenário de um lago. Ela chamou esta cena de "Um toque de Monet".
A minha saiu de lá 80 % montada, faltando colar a árvore - que ela já trouxe pronta - e uns detalhes que eu queria fazer diferente...
Bem, na verdade eu acabei decidindo mudar algumas coisas BEM importantes, como a ponte (que achei muito pequena, apesar de bonita) e a árvore, pois queria uma mais 'natural. Comprei um kit da Marilyn Heath Lauffer (EarthScapes by Heath), e levei todo este tempo para fazer a árvore (que não ficou igual à dela, claro, rsrs, mas até que gostei do resultado!), a ponte e concluir o cenário. Ficou assim...

When I went to Chicago, in April 2010, I took a workshop at Bishop's show by Kimberly Hammer. We had to make flowers and assemble this lovely scene "A touch of Monet". I loved it! But my scene, as it usually happens in these workshops, was not fully finished. Only the tree - which she supplied fully finished - had to be glued on. But...
Well, the thing is... I actually wanted a different bridge for my scene. Even though I think the one supplied is beautiful, I also thought it was a little too small and decided to make another one, of wood. I also wanted a more 'natural looking' tree, so I purchased this kit by Marilyn Heath Lauffer (EarthScapes by Heath), and it took me all this time to finally make both the bridge and the tree (which does NOT look like Marilyn's, naturally, this was my first tree! :) ...) and finish the scene. This is how it turned out...

É transbordando de alegria e com um imenso orgulho - não vou negar... :) - que compartilho com vocês que neste ano meus trabalhos apareceram em duas revistas estrangeiras especializadas em miniaturas:

DollsHouse & Miniature Scene - edição 211, de Janeiro 2012, pág 30.
mostra uma sala que fiz na escala 1:48, onde o sofá e as poltronas foram baseados em um tutorial publicado pela mesma revista.

Dollhouse Miniatures - edição 26, março/abril de 2012, págs 81 e 82.
mostra um quadro representando um consultório de dentista, que fiz na escala 1:12.

Nos dois casos, participei como leitora, pois sou assinante das duas revistas. Eles abriram a oportunidade para que os leitores enviassem seus trabalhos, e nos dois casos tive a sorte de ser escolhida. Eeeeba!!! :)

It is with an overwhelming feeling of joy and really proud - I won't deny it... :) - that I share with you: two of my miniature settings have been shown in two separate international magazines specialized in miniature!

it shows a living room in 1:48 I made, where the settee and the armchairs were made based on a tut published earlier by that very same magazine.

it shows a setting I made of a dentist office in 1:12, and a very nice article goes along with it.

In both cases I submitted my work to the magazines after they opened this possibility to their readers, on Facebook. As I subscribe them both, I did so. And I was lucky enough to have my work picked. Needless to say, I'm totally thrilled!!! Yay!!! :)

Cenário em escala diferente - Unusual scale setting

Desta vez quem "ditou" a escala e a escolha das cores foi o... papel de parede! :) Ganhei uma folha de scrapbook linda, 15x15 cm e tinha um quadro com esta medida interna (17x17 cm medida externa). Pronto! O resto foi adequar os móveis ao tamanho, e decidi que a escala 1:14 ficaria perfeita! Escolhi os tons lilás e verde claro como predominantes, pois estavam presentes no "papel de parede" e poderiam servir tanto para menino quanto para menina. E móveis mais 'estilosos' para variar. Que tal ficou?

This time my setting scale and the choice of colors were 'ruled' by the... wallpaper! :) I got this gorgeous scrapbooking paper, only 6" x 6" and had this wall scene with the same measure (6 3/4" x 6 3/4" outside). That was it! All I had to do was to adjust the furniture to the scale, and I realized that if they were in 1:14 they'd fit perfectly! I chose lavender and pistache green as main colors, as those were also present on the 'wallpaper', so the scene could be used either for a boy or for a girl. I went for more 'fancy' furniture for a change. What do you think of it?

Mais um quarto de bebê (menina) - And another nursery (girl)

Este foi um pedido que fizeram. O quarto de bebê menino fez sucesso, me pediram para fazer um parecido para menina. Não tinha o cenário nem os móveis, então usei um quadro que tinha e fiz os móveis do zero, usando balsa (berço) e papel paraná (cômoda). Aí está o resultado! :)

This was made under request (not a commission). The baby-boy nursery was very well received and I was asked to make a baby-girl version of it. I didn't have the structure I used for the scene, and it would take quite some time to order and receive it. So I used a 'shadow box' I already had. I also didn't have any more of the MDF furniture I used, so I made the furniture from scratch: the crib from balsa wood and some dowels I had imported (can't find those here...) and the dresser out of cardboard. Everything in this scene was made from scratch, except for the baby bottle and the pacifier. And here's the result! :)

A mini de hoje tem uma inspiração diferente... No ano passado entraram em contato comigo por email perguntando se eu faria um quadro parecido com um que tinham visto, pois o artesão que fazia aquele quadro (assim me disseram) não encontrava mais os mesmos móveis usados. Eu disse que poderia fazer, mas não ficaria idêntico. Claro, cada artesão tem seu próprio estilo. No final, a pessoa optou por encomendar o quadro de um outro artesão da sua própria cidade, pois ficaria mais em conta. Até fiquei feliz com isso, pois sou da opinião que o artesão local e seu artesanato devem sempre ser valorizados!

Today's scene has a different inspiration behind it. Last year I was contacted by a potential customer. She wanted to know if I could make a scene similar to one she's seen. According to her, the artisan was no longer making those (as he/she could not find the same pieces of furniture). I said I could, but, obviously, it would end up a little different. For each artisan has his/her own style!... In the end, she decided to commission it from a local artisan (we're from different cities and states), which I think was the best decision, as I believe local artisan / crafts should always been given preference and valued!

Mas fiquei com vontade de fazer o quadro mesmo assim, para ver como é que ficaria com meu estilo. Em janeiro encomendei a cristaleira e o quadro da Fabrikota. A "adega" não achei, fiz do zero. E ficou assim... :)
Nonetheless, I had an 'itch' to try and make that scene, just to see how it would come out with 'my style'. In January I ordered online the cabinet and the frame/structure where the scene goes, but had to make the wine rack from scratch. And this is how it turned out... :)

Novo cenário - New setting

Fiz um novo cenário. Fiz pensando em vender, então procurei materiais mais em conta para baratear o custo. Usei móveis MDF, em vez de fazer do zero ou usar kits importados (maior qualidade). Mas não adiantou, eu me empolgo e acabo caprichando. Acho que ficou bem legal, o que você acha?

I have just finished a new scene. It's narrower than a full roombox, meant to fit a shelf or as a decoration on top of a dresser. I used some very simple MDF furniture, avaliable in my country. As I want to start selling my work, I tried to cut down costs, hence the MDF furniture. Anyway, I got carried away and still spend a lot of hours trying to make it look the best I could. Hope you'll like this one.

Tutorial - Cômoda / Dresser

Conforme prometi há algum tempo, aqui vai o tutorial de como fazer a cômoda do quarto de menina. O legal é que como é difícil para nós brasileiros conseguirmos madeira boa para fazer miniatura, este tutorial mostra como fazer com um material muito mais fácil de achar: papel cartão! Pode ser até o papel de que fazem caixas de sapato. Este é o papel panamá. Não é tão compacto e esfarela um pouco mais, mas também funciona bem.
Então, mãos à obra!

É só baixar o arquivo em pdf aqui.

OBS: Estou usando o Google docs pela primeira vez. O visualizador deles deixa as imagens do documento com baixa resolução, mas quando você baixa o arquivo (download) e vê no seu computador, elas voltam ao normal!

As I promised some time ago, here goes the tutorial on how to make the little dresser as I made it for my Little Girl's bedroom. What's cool about this tutorial is that you can use thick cardboard to make it, if you can't find wood. Even your shoe boxes will supply you with the necessary material to make it!

All you have to do is download the pdf file here.

Note: I'm using Google docs for the first time. Their preview tool shows pictures in low resolution, but when you download the file and see it from your computer, they are back to normal!

Meu primeiro 1:48 - My first quarter scale

Já fiz vários ambientes na escala padrão de 1:12. Já fiz até uma casa em 1:144. Mas 'pulei' as escalas intermediárias, a 1:24, chamada lá fora de 'half-scale' (meia escala, porque é metade da 1:12) e a 1:48 ou 'quarter scale' (escala 1 quarto, porque é 1/4 da 1:12).
Então tinha muita vontade de tentar montar um ambiente nessas escalas. A 1:48 me parecia a mais desafiadora, pois é muito menor que a 1:12 para fazer detalhes e, ao mesmo tempo, bem maior que a 1:144 onde a simples 'menção' de um objeto já basta para dar a ilusão dele - a menos que se veja ampliado em uma foto macro, rsrs...
Daí outro dia resolvi arriscar comprando alguns imãs de geladeira em site de leilão lá fora. Cada peça veio em uma escala... O telefone está na 1:12. Mas o toca-discos está na 1:24, o kit de cozinha em 1:10 ou 1:6 (não tenho certeza) e o armário, 1:48... Muito fofos, mas...

I've already made some settings in 1:12. I've even made a whole house in 1:144. But I skipped both half (1:24) and quarter scales (1:48).
I was 'itching' to try my hand at those scales. 1:48 seemed more challenging: way smaller than 1:12 to work on details and way bigger than 1:144 when the 'hint' of an object is usually enough to make a good impression (except when seen in a close up macro photo, lol!)
Then a few weeks back I tried buying some inexpensive miniature fridge magnets. They are very cute, but each one is in a different scale: the telephone is 1:12, but the record player is in 1:24, the kitchen kit is in 1:10 or 1:6 (not sure) and the cabinet in 1:48.

Para completar, vi um tutorial da Pamela Junk na DollsHouse and Miniature Scene de outubro 2011 onde ela ensinava a fazer um lindo jogo de sofá na escala 1:48. Resolvi que estava na hora de tentar esta escala!!! :)
Tirando o móvel-estante, claro, e o jogo de chá - feito pela Chu, o quadro, que é uma redução de uma pintura de verdade feita por Walkiria Helena Barany, o resto todo fui eu quem fez, inclusive a 'roombox' em si. Não gostei da caixa que fiz, mas gostei do resultado geral! Espero que gostem... :)

On top of that, I saw a great tutorial by Pamela Junk in October 2011 DollsHouse and Miniature Scene issue where she teaches how to make an adorable sofa/armchair set in 1:48. That was it! I decided it was about time I tried this scale!!! :)
Except for the cabinet, the wall painting which is a printed reduction of a real life painting by Walkiria Helena Barany, and for the tea set by Chu, I made everything else in this setting, including the 'roombox' itself. Not happy about the roombox structure, but very pleased with the setting. Hope you'll like it too... :)

Tutorial - Cortina / Curtains

Como prometido, segue agora o primeiro tutorial referente ao quarto de menina: a cortina!
Material necessário:
- tecido com estampa BEM miúda, algodão é melhor
- papel grosso, tipo cartolina
- alfinetes, os mais finos que conseguir! (usei de patchwork)
- folha de caderno
- ferro de passar com vapor
- spray para cabelo (do tipo 'forte') ou gel para cabelo, diluído em água, em um spray manual
- suporte para 'espetar'. O melhor é cortiça, pois resiste ao calor do vapor.
- tesoura para cortar tecido
- tesoura pequena bem afiada
- régua
- lápis
- cola branca
- frasco de cola com aplicador fino na ponta. (Atelier Prince vende, chama "aplicador de guta")
- adesivo dupla-face
- acabamento à escolha (fitas, rendas, etc)

As promised, here goes the first tut related to the little girl's roombox: the curtains!

Material used:

- very small print fabric - cotton is best
- thick paper, like bristol board
- pins, the thinner the better! (I used patchwork ones)

- a notebook sheet (slated, or with 'lines')
- steam iron
- hair spray, the strong kind - or hair gel diluted in water, use a pump spray

- surface where you can fin and fold. I used a cork board.

- scissors to cut fabric
- small sharp scissors
- ruller
- pencil or mechanical pencil
- white glue
- fine tip glue applicator, for tacky glue (Templewood has those).
- double sided adhesive tape
- trim of your choice

Meça a largura e a altura do chão até uns 2 cm acima da janela. Esta será a medida de cada LADO da cortina. Corte 2 vezes, deixando 0,5 cm em cada lado para arremate.
Para cortar:- passe o tecido com o ferro (normal).- marque as medidas com régua e lápis do avesso
Measure the height from floor to about 3/4" above the top of the window, and the window width. That will be the measures for each SIDE of the curtains. Cut twice. Allow 1/8" for rims.To cut:
- iron the fabric (normal iron).
- draw the lines measured using a ruler and the pencil, on the wrong side of the fabric.

- passe um fio de cola sobre as linhas traçadas. Quando secar, corte. Só assim impedirá que desfie! :)

- apply a thin line of glue on top of the lines you draw. When they are dry, then cut. That's how you prevent fabric from fraying. :)

- passe mais um fio de cola em cada lateral e dobre para o avesso.
- apply another thin line of tacky glue and fold to the wrong side for rims.

- prenda a folha de caderno na superfície de cortiça. Faça uma linha perpendicular (90 graus) às linhas da folha. Serão seus guias!
- tape the notebook sheet on the cork work surface. Draw a perpendicular (90 degrees) line to the sheet printed lines. Those will be your guides!

- prenda com alfinetes (quanto menos, melhor!) uma lateral da cortina seguindo uma das linhas do caderno. Faça uma prega e prenda de novo. Vá fazendo pregas e prendendo com alfinetes, tomando cuidado de seguir as linhas guias para que fique tudo bem reto! Faça o mesmo com o outro lado da cortina.
- pin down one of the sides of the curtain following a printed line. Fold a little and pin again. The less pins you use, the better (less marks later!). Keep folding and pining but make sure you follow the guide lines to keep the curtain straight! Do the same with the other side.

- use o ferro a vapor para jogar vapor nas pregas.
- apply steam.

- solte metade dos alfinetes, mantendo uma das laterais presas. Empurre gentilmente as pregas como na foto e prenda novamente em alguns pontos.
- carefully remove pins from the lower half of the curtain, but keep them on the outer side. Gently push the drapes towards the outer side like in the picture. Pin down again.

- Agora aplique o spray de cabelo generosamente. Se tiver alguma dúvida, teste antes num pedaço de tecido para ver se mancha. Espere secar.
- Now apply hairspray, don't be shy. If in doubt, try first on a spare piece of fabric to make sure it won't change its color. Let it dry.

- Corte a sanca no papel grosso (cartolina, por exemplo). Adapte o modelo abaixo às medidas da sua janela.
- Aplique o dupla-face no lado DIREITO da sanca (onde não tem marcas de lápis).
- Remova a proteção de UMA das fitas, ajuste no tecido (pelo lado avesso) para que fique reto. Quando estiver bem posicionado, pressione. Verifique se está correto pelo lado direito. Só então remova as outras tiras e cole o restante do tecido. Corte o tecido deixando uma margem de 0,5 cm.
- também corte a braçadeira 2 vezes. Use cola ou fita adesiva dupla face para colar no tecido.

- Cut the pelmet pattern above on bristol board or similar paper. Adapt the pattern to your window measures.- Apply the double sided tape to the RIGHT side of the template (without the pencil marks). -- Remove the protection of ONE of the tapes and position the pelmet onto the wrong side of the fabric, make sure it's straight. When well positioned remove the other protections and stick the fabric to the template. Cut fabric around, allow 1/8" for rim.
- also cut the tieback twice and glue to fabric, use double sided tape or glue.

- dobre a sanefa e cole as abas. Segure com prendedores até a cola secar.
- fold the pelmet, glue the tabs and hold in place with small clamps till dry.

- cole um arremate na sanefa e na braçadeira.
- cole a braçadeira nas cortinas e as cortinas no lado interno da sanefa.
- use uma fita dupla-face na parte inferior da cortina se achar que ela está abrindo muito.
- glue a trim of your choice on the bottom part of the pelmet and around the tiebacks.
- glue the tiebacks around the curtains and the curtains to the inner side of the pelmet.- use a piece of tape to hold the lower side of the curtains together if you think they're opening too much.

Pronto, sua cortina está pronta!!! Agora é só colar na parede acima da janela e curtir o ambiente!
That's it! Your curtain is finished!!! Now all you have to do is glue it above the window and enjoy the room!

Finalmente voltei a fazer minis, eeba!!! :)

Inspirada por um quarto criado por Sandra Manring mostrada na revista americana Miniature Collector de abril de 2011, resolvi fazer um quarto de menina mais 'tropical', mais no nosso estilo mas com uma 'atmosfera' bem parecida com o quarto dela.

I finally started mini-ing again, yay!!! :)

Inspired by a roombox created by Sandra Manring (picture of the room in the end) and shown on Miniature Collector april 2011, I decided to make my own version of that room, more contemporary and Brazilian style, sort of speak. But still keeping the original 'girly' atmosphere.

Pois bem, foi assim que ficou a minha versão:

Praticamente tudo foi feito por mim. Mais fácil falar o que NÃO fiz, rsrs...:
- ursos de pelúcia
- 2 bonecas
- ursos de resina (mas fui eu quem fez os três da prateleria, em biscuit)
- carrinho de boneca em acrílico
- par de tênis
- câmera digital
- chapéu
- a roombox em si (mdf pronta)
O resto TODO, sim, fiz do zero! :)

Nos próximos dias vou publicar dois tutoriais de itens no quarto, a cortina e a cômoda. Espero que gostem!

Pratically everything was made by me from scratch. It's easier to list which items I DIDN'T make, lol...:

- resin teddy bears (but I did make the three teddy bears on the right shelf, from cold porcelain)- toy 'crystal' stroller

Cactus

Há alguns meses minha mãe viu um vaso de cactus em uma revista importada sobre miniaturas que recebo. Achei tão legal que ela gostou tanto a ponto de vir me mostrar e dizer: "Deste aqui eu gostei!" Era um vaso com vários cactus e suculentas, feito pelos artistas IGMA da Pearce Miniatures. Bem, o que ela viu na foto estava acima do meu orçamento, mas encomendei um menor, muito lindo, que estava em promoção. E agora no natal fiz um quadro para ela com este vaso de ponto focal. É um canto de um jardim, com uma foto dando a entender que tem muito mais jardim/quintal. E neste pequeno canto perto do muro tem os cactus. Fiz uma pequena mesa de madeira que aprendi na American Miniaturist, edição de outubro de 2005, um vaso com Espada de São Jorge feito com fita crepe e tinta, e um exemplar da Mammillaria, um cactus bem grande e peludo! Este eu aprendi na edição especial de natal da AIM, Calendário de contagem regressiva (Advent Calendar, dia 21).

Tendo em mente que ela gosta de ambientes minimalistas (sem muitos objetos), acho que ela gostou... :)

A few months ago my mom surprised me when she showed me a picture from Miniature Collector magazine to tell me she really liked a cactus arrangement by Pearce Miniatures IGMA artisans. Such a display of appreciation for miniatures is not that common, so I decided to buy one of their arrangements - one that would fit my limited budget, of course! lol... - and surprise her with it. So, as a Xmas gift for her I made this vignette that would display a corner of a supposedly much larger garden/backyard. This would be the cactus (cacti? cactuses?...) 'corner'. On the left side I put a vase of Snake Plant, I made out of masking tape and paint. On the right side, I placed a vase with a rather large Mammillaria cactus I learned from AIM's Advent Calendar, day 21, and the Pearce's piece itself on the top of a table I learned from October 2005 American Miniaturist's issue.

This vignette is obviously not an IGMA masterpiece, but keeping in mind she prefers minimalist settings, I believe she liked it... :)

Esta casa, na escala 1:144 foi feita baseada em um projeto inicial de Laura Miller, do grupo virtual MicroMinis. À medida em que ia fazendo a minha, outros participantes do grupo mandavam suas fotos, e elas iam me inspirando a fazer mais coisas no meu projeto também!

Usei alguns kits da SKD (Susan Karatjas), que havia comprado quando estive nos EUA em Abril deste ano. O resto fui improvisando, como a comida e a parte da 'jardinagem'.

Curti MUITO fazer este projeto, e agora estou 'viciada' nesta escala!!! Veja as fotos da casa inteira na minha mão para ter uma idéia de como é pequenina! Só mesmo usando lupas, pinças delicadas e palitos para passar a cola. Tudo sempre com muito cuidado...

This 1/144 Tuscan Home was a free project by Laura Miller, from MicroMinis group. While I was making mine, other participants of the group would post pictures of their own versions, and they inspired me to add more to my own project too!

I used some kits by SDK (Susan Karajtas), like the pergola with the swing and the furniture used in the bedroom and the kitchen/dining room. I improvised the rest... :)

I had SO MUCH fun building this house I can say I'm totally addicted to this scale now! 1/12 seems so HUGE now, lol! See the pictures of the whole house in my hand to grasp how small it is - and it fits anywhere in the (RL) house! :)

Um presente - A gift

Fiz este cenário como presente para meu dentista. Ele me deu várias ferramentas de dentista de presente, merecia! :)

Foi tudo feito por mim, do zero. Só a plantinha na prateleira é da Ivani Grande, e os 'vasos' são contas que comprei.

I made this setting as a gift for my dentist. He's given me a lot of dental tools (that are SO useful in miniature making), so he totally deserved it! :)

I made it all from scratch. Except for the vase/plant on the shelf. That's by Ivani Grande. And the silver 'vases' are actually jewlery findings.

Jane Gariba has kindly provided me with a tutorial to make dentist chairs, but during an appointment with my real life dentist, I noticed his model was completely different from hers. So I started it all over again, and only reused the base. But I did learn a lot from hers. Thank you, Jane!

Eu escolhi fazer uma cadeira moderna. Como essa de armação de metal tubular aí em cima. Para variar, afinal, quase todo mundo faz algo de madeira ou antigo... Quis fazer algo diferente! :)

Além disso, era uma boa oportunidade para usar algumas ferramentas que comprei em Chicago:

* um alicate que dobra arames

* um cortador de tubos

The Chair

I chose to make a modern chair. Like this one in the picture at the beginning of this post. Just for a change, as most people usually choose to make something on wood or ancient... I wanted to make something different! :)

Besides, it would be a good opportunity to use a couple of tools I had bought when in Chicago::

* a plier that bends wires and tubes

* a tool that cuts tubes perfectly

IMPORTANTE: Use agulha 26 de bordar. Ela tem uma ponta redonda que não fura o dedo!

A trama toda é feita em 4 'passagens':

1) horizontal

2) vertical

3) diagonal 45 graus => \

4) diagonal 135 graus => /

Eu inverti as duas primeiras passagens (primeiro vertical, depois horizontal), mas isso não afeta em nada.

IMPORTANT: Use a blunt embroidry needle, so as NOT to hurt yourself! I used #26.

The caning is formed by four threadings:

1) horizontal

2) vertical

3) diagonal 45 degrees => \

4) diagonal 135 degrees=> /

I inverted the first two. Started by vertical and then by horizontal. No problem there.

Saindo do segundo furo da fileira, vá até o mesmo furo do outro lado e retorne pelo mesmo furo que começou.

Tie the thread at the second lower hole of the left side and go to the right adjacent hole, then back to the same hole on the left.

Parece muito com alinhavar um tecido. Desta vez, o importante é passar por cima de um fio, por baixo do próximo e assim sucessivamente. Seu mantra nessa fase é simples: "Por cima, por baixo". "Mantras" são repetições que ajudam a não perder o 'fio da meada'... :) Na volta, faça o contrário: "por baixo, por cima..." É nesta fase que user uma madeira mais fina na parte de cima da moldura ajuda muito!

No final, parece uma gaze de algodão, dessas de hospital. Não tem problema, mas se isso incomodar, pode usar um pente fino, para manter os fios no lugar certo. Eu não fiz isso desta vez!

Feels a lot like basting when sewing. What is important here is to go OVER one thread and UNDER the next. Your 'mantra' here is "over, under..". 'Mantras' are simple sentences that if repeat while weaving, they'll help you not get lost. When you come back, do the opposite: "under, over..." In this step you'll see how important it is to have used a thinner strip on the top part of the frame
In the end, it'll look a lot like cotton gauze, the hospital kind. Not to worry. If it bothers you, you can use a broken comb to keep threads in place while weaving. I didn't do it this time...

De agora em diante, parece como bordar. Só que é até mais fácil, pois o 'ponto' vai sempre numa só direção e não tem que se preocupar com o avesso, nem com pontos solitários! :) Passe por cima dos pontos horizontais e por baixo dos verticais. Mantra: "por cima em pé, por baixo deitado" E nada de pensar bobagens, viu? :)

Pode ver que a trama final começa a aparecer e os fios se encaixam no lugar +/- certo. Lembre de dar uma puxadinha leve do fio (cuidado para não arrebentar!) para ajudar a ajustar no lugar.

From now on, it'll feel a lot like embroidering. But better, as you'll only work in one direction, no need to worry about the wrong side or with 'orphan' stiches! :) Go under the two companion horizontals and over the two companion vertical canes. Mantra: "over vertical, under horizontal" And no mental jokes! :)
Now you can see the caning beginning to take form and that the threads start to fall more or less in the right place. Remember to (very!) gently pull the thread (be careful not to tear it!) to help this adjustment.

Finalmente, a última passagem! É igual à terceira, só que o mantra é ao contrário: "por baixo em pé, por cima deitado". Dar uma puxadinha de leve a cada 2 cm é fundamental para a trama ficar correta!

Finally, the last threading! It's just like the third one, but the 'mantra' here is the opposite: "UNDER vertical, OVER horizontal". A gentle pull on the thread every inch woked is fundamental to help adjusting in place.
The actual caning is now complete!

Acabamento

Se você usou uma linha na cor da palha, é só misturar água com cola branca (meio a meio) e espalhar bem. Dê umas batidinhas com o pincel seco depois para retirar todo o excesso. Repita + 1 vez. Se usou linha clara ou branca, pode pintar com uma tinta acrílica BEM diluída. É preferível pintar mais vezes até achar o tom do que usar uma tinta grossa e ficar feio!

Deixe para envernizar na peça, quando for envernizar a peça toda.

Use uma tesoura bem afiada para cuidadosamente cortar a palhinha da moldura. Deixe sempre na posição horzontal e em superfície plana.

Finishing

If you used a colored thread, all you have to do now is to use a 1:1 mixture of white glue and water and spread over it with a brush. Make sure it doesn't have any lumps, use a dry brush for that. Led dry flat. If you used white thread, use a wash of color of your preference. I used ocre tones. Apply as many layers as you need until you get the right shade.
Leave any varnishing to be done when you have the finished piece of furniture, so you can do it all at once.
Use sharp scissors to carefully cut the swatch from the frame. Let lay flat.

Finalizada, colada e tingida!

O Fio

O tutorial do Ferd Sobol recomenda usar uma linha para crochê espessura 100. No Brasil não tem, só até 80. A linha de crochê tem a vantagem de ser mais resistente (você vai ter que dar uns 'puxões' leves para deixar o fio reto) e menos 'peludo'. Eu comprei desta tal linha quando fui aos EUA, mas preferi tentar com linha de costura comum para ver se era viável. E É!!! :)

Para tornar o fio mais resistente, menos 'felpudo' e evitar que fique 'desenrolando' e fique cada vez mais grosso, passe o fio - NUNCA trabalhe com mais de 1 metro de fio por vez, dá muito nó! - umas 3 vezes em cera de abelha.

Ferd Sobol's tutorial recommends using DMC Cordonnet #100. It's not avaliable in Brazil, we only have up to #80, by Anchor. I did have some that I bought while in the US, but I wanted to try using common cotton sewing thread to see if it would work too. It DOES! :)

The thread he recommended has many advantages, though. It's stronger (you'll have to gently pull it sometimes to straighten the weav), it's also less 'frizzy' and won't unwind itself as much while you're working. NEVER work with pieces longer than 3 ft, it gets tangled!. But for the sewing thread to work, you must pull it through a small lump of beeswax a few times (3 to 4).

Preparando a placa

1) Corte um retângulo interno deixando somente duas fileiras externas de furos na placa, mais uma margem de 5 a 6 mm. IMPORTANTE: corte bem na reta de furos. Se cortar entre as fileiras, não terá margem nenhuma para aumentar os furos! Lixe depois se precisar acertar e tirar pontas. Para cortar pode usar uma serra de joalheiro ou um estilete, passando várias vezes.

2) Alargue cada furo mais perto do vão central usando uma broca fina de 1,2. Compra-se em fornituras, lojas que vendem ferramentas para relojoeiros e joalheiros. Compre também o suporte para usar a broca.

Preparing the perfboard

1) Cut out a rectangle from the inner part of the board, leaving 2 rows of perforations and about 3/16" external margin for glueing. IMPORTANT: cut ON the perforation line. If you try to cut between the lines, you'll have NO margin to enlarge the holes later, believe me! :) Sand the inner part to make it smooth and straigh. You can cut the board using a jeweler's saw or a craft knife (several cuts might be necessary. No need to use pressure) . Sand afterwords to make it even or eliminate 'dents'

2) Enlarge the inner row of perforations using a small drill and 1/16" drill bit.

Montando a Moldura

O primeiro passo é montar a moldura onde será 'tecida' a palhinha.

Material usado:

- placa de fenolite perfurada... hã???... kkkkk! é esse nome estranho mesmo! Compra-se em lojas especializadas em material de eletrônica. Não é muito caro e têm de vários tamanhos. A minha mede 10 x 15 cm.

- ripas de madeira finas, usei cedrinho. Evite a balsa porque é muito macia e não vai dar firmeza à moldura! Usei as que tinha, de 1, 2 e 3 mm de espessura. Recomendo usar só as de 1 e 3 ou 1 e 2.

1a)- 2 tiras de madeira: 1o,6 x 1,2 cm x 1 ou 2 mm

2a)- 2 tiras de madeira: 10, 6 x 0,9 cm x 1 mm

3a)- 2 tiras de madeira: 10,6, x 1,2 cm x 2 ou 3 mm

1b)- 2 tiras de madeira: 15,5 x 1,2 x 1 ou 2 mm

2b)- 2 tiras de madeira: 15,5 x 0,9 cm x 1 mm

3b)- 2 tiras de madeira: 15,5 x 1,2 cm x 2 ou 3 mm

- cola branca ou de madeira

*Faça uma moldura retangular primeiro com as tiras mais grossas (3 a e b).

*Depois faça com as tiras mais finas e mais estreitas (2 a e b), sendo que elas ficam alinhadas com a parte EXTERNA da moldura.

*Cole agora a placa de fenolite.

*Finalmente uma terceira moldura com as tiras de madeira restantes (1 a e b). Estas ficam por cima. Veja na foto abaixo um corte transversal do "sanduíche" de madeira.

*Reforce com mais uma linha de cola pelo lado de dentro e de baixo, entre a placa de fenolite e a moldura de madeira para garantir a firmeza. Segure com prendedores de roupa e deixe secar bem.

*Lixe bem para deixar lisa e evitar lascas prendendo o fio. Passe termolina leitosa para selar e lixe novamente. Eu faria os cantos arredondados agora. Ouça este conselho!... :)


Corte transversal do 'sanduíche' da moldura. Use uma madeira mais fina que eu usei para o lado 'esquerdo'=topo. Cross cut of the frame 'sandwich'. Use a strip of wood thinner than I did for the 'left'=top side.

Making the Frame!

The first step is to make the frame where you'll 'weave' the caning.

Materials used:

- pre-punched IC spacing perfboard 4 x 6 avaliable at Radio Shack (so I've heard...) .

- strips of wood to make the frame. The frame is needed to prevend the perfboard to warp as you weave the caning. I used cedar wood, because that's what I had. You can use any wood you have except balsawood that is too soft and won't make a firm frame!

(1a)- 2 strips of wood: 4 3/16" x 1/2" x 1/32" or 1/16" thick

(2a)- 2 strips of wood: 4 3/16" x 3/8" x 1/32" thick

(3a)- 2 strips of wood: 4 3/16" x 1/2" x 1/16" or 1/8" thick

(1b)- 2 strips of wood: 6 3/32" x 1/2" x 1/32" or 1/16" thick

(2b)- 2 strips of wood: 6 3/32" x 3/8" x 1/32" thick

(3b)- 2 strips of wood: 6 3/32" x 1/2" x 1/16" or 1/8" thick

- white or tacky glue

*Build a rectangular frame using the thicker strips (3 a and b).

*On top of that frame, glue another frame with the thinnest strips (2 a and b), flush with the OUTER side of the first frame.

*Place the perfboard in the center of the frame, same level as the thinnest frame.

*Finally, make and glue the top frame using the remaining strips (1 a and b). Look the picture above for the cross section of the strip 'sandwich'.

*Reinforce the frame with an extra line of glue on the bottom side of the perfboard next to the frame, to strengten the whole jig of framing. Use clamps to keep it all firmly together and let dry.
*Sand well and aplly some sealant to prevent thread from being caught.
*I would make the corners round now...(don't leave them square as I did!) just saying!... :)

Palhinha modelo real - RL caning

O Projeto Palhinha é um desafio nacional lançado no grupo MegaMini. Os participantes tiveram um ano para criar um móvel ou objeto usando uma palhinha tradicional, em miniatura, preferencialmente seguindo o tutorial de Ferd Sobol, que saiu em uma revista de miniaturas americana. Ainda não vou mostrar meu móvel, porque vamos mostrar todos juntos, mas vou mostar as etapas de criação da palhinha.

The Caning Project was a nationwide project started at Yahoo Group MegaMini. The participants had a whole year to make a piece of furniture or any other object using traditional caning, inspired by Ferd Sobol's tutorial published on American Miniaturist, from September to November 2007, editions 53 to 55. I still can't show my finished chair, as we'll all 'reveal' them together. But I'll show here each step of the process.

Um espaço organizado é fundamental para criar com tranquilidade... Nada mais desesperador do que passar 15 minutos procurando aquela ferramenta que estava o tempo todo bem debaixo do nariz, misturada numa confusão criativa!!!

Bem, para facilitar minha vida nessas horas, eu montei esse porta-treco usando rolos de papel-toalha e papel-higiênico, forrados com tecido. E a base foi feita com papel-cartão, também forrada com tecido. O conjunto gira graças a um rolamento.Muito prático!!!

An organized workplace is fundamental to enable tranquility while creating... Nothing more exasperating than waist 15 minutes looking desperately for that tool that was right under your nose all the time, but mixed with a myriade of other stuff!!!

In order to help me on that area, I made myself a rotating tool holder out of the central tubes from paper towel and toilet rolls, covered with fabric. Also covered with fabric is the base, cut out from cardboard. The mechanism that allows the whole thing to turn is a simple ball bearing. Very practical!!!

Nem era por falta de fazer minis que eu não postava o que estava trabalhando, mas é porque eram todas ligadas a desafios e projetos comuns que não posso mostrar antes deles terminarem!...

It wasn't for lack of miniature working that I didn't post what I was working on, but because they are all (so far) linked to group challenges or projects. And I am not supposed to show them before they are over!...

Mas finalmente... Um deles terminou! O Desafio da Tia Betinha!!!

But finally... One of them is over! "Aunt Betina* Challenge"!!!

Eu não ganhei, claro!... :) Mas foi bom e instrutivo participar, gostei! Aqui vai a foto da minha obra e embaixo a criação original da Betinha Murta, que a gente deveria tentar fazer igual.

I didn't win, obviously!... :) But it was fun and I learned a lot by taking part of it, I really liked it! Here is a picture of my work followed by Betinha (* or Betina, as she's known in some intl groups) Murta's original creation, which we were to try and make a similar one.

Livros com miniaturas / Books with miniatures in the story

Às vezes, ao invés de FAZER miniaturas, me divirto LENDO sobre elas, em livros e revistas especializadas, ou na internet. Recentemente descobri um novo prazer: ler livros de estórias com o 'universo' das miniaturas como cenário ou até papel principal. Bão dimais!!! (como se diz em Minas...) Só um detalhe, são todos em inglês, sem tradução no mercado nacional à vista... :(

Sometimes, instead of enjoying my time MAKING miniatures, I have a great time READING about them, in specialized books, magazines, or on the internet. Recently I have found a new source of pleasure: novel boods where miniatures play a very important role. Awesome!!!! Too bad for most Brazilians that they aren't avaliable in Portuguese, only in English - and fluency in the language is required...

Anyway, here they are:

O primeiro que eu descobri foi no Art Institute de Chicago, onde ficam as Thorne Rooms. É uma aventura com dois amigos, uma menina e um garoto, de uns 12 anos, que descobrem uma chave mágica que os faz encolher até ficarem na escala 1:12. Eles dão um jeito de visitarem os famosos ambientes em miniatura por dentro e vivem eletrizantes aventuras. Muito bom!

Além disso, dá para sentir que se está dentro de cada ambiente mencionado, tão detalhada é a descrição.

The first 'story' book where miniatures play a main role was by chance while I visited Chicago Art Institute, where the Thorne Rooms are hosted.

The book is about a couple of 12-year-old kids who find a magical key that can shrink them to 1:12 scale. In small size, they visit several of the Thorne Rooms after hours. There they live some very interesting adventures, being able to "be" in the era that the room represents. Very entertaining!

Also, you can 'revisit' in your mind all the rooms as if from inside. The descriptions are very clear.

Depois, enquanto pesquisava outros livros sobre miniatura na internet, descobri um livro de mistério e assassinato com as miniaturas como fundo de pano importante. A autora, cujo pseudônimo é Margaret Grace, já escreveu outros livros na mesma série, com os mesmos personagens principais, que pretendo ler assim que conseguir comprar! A estória é muito bem escrita, fica difícil largar o livro. E além disso, como miniaturista na vida real, ela dá várias dicas de como fazer miniaturas de itens comuns, tanto no meio da estória quanto uma lista generosa de outras dicas no final.

Some time later, while searching on the internet for books on miniature on the internet, I came across a mistery novel where minatures and a small miniature show play an important row. The author, who writes under the name of Margaret Grace, has so far written about 5 books in the series, always with the same main characters. I really want to read them all, as soon as I can manage to get them! The story is very well developed, a page-turner. Besides, there are plenty of trash-to-treasure tips all over the story and also a generous list of other tips at the end of the book. Thumbs up!!!

Quando criei o blog do Dollhouse Brazil foi pensando em agilizar a divulgação de informações sobre miniaturas e contar detalhes que não caberiam num website, já que ele tem um caráter menos transitório. Por um lado ficaria mais fácil para mim (dá trabalho atualizar sites... rsrs) e mais dinâmico para quem acompanha o site, já que dá para acompanhar o blog sabendo sempre quando há atualizações.

Mas minha viagem a Chicago levantou uma nova 'necessidade', ou melhor dizendo, uma vontade: de mostrar o que comprei e o andamento do meu trabalho com minhas novas ferramentas e suprimentos. E isso já não cabberia no blog do DHB... Já é algo 'pessoal' demais :)

Por isso este novo blog, desvinculado do site original, mas com a mesma autora! :) E bilíngue também!!! ;)

When I came up with Dollhouse Brazil website (and its blog in Portuguese), the main purpose was - and still is - to divulge the work of Brazilian miniaturists abroad and bring updates from what's going on abroad to Brazilians. The site's blog in Portuguese has the same aim, just allows more agility in spreading the news and it also allows me to approach more transitory info that wouldn't fit into the more 'permanent' info an informative/resources website usually has.

After my trip to Chicago (April 2010), I felt the need for a more personal approach. I wanted to show to both my Brazilian and foreign friends all the stuff I bought for myself during that awesome trip as well as the progress of my work with those. As this wouldn't fit the original aim in DHB website and blog, hence a new blog had to be created.

So here it is! Detached from the 'original' website, but by the same author! :) AND bilingual too!!! :)
